The hit PC sandbox game Minecraft reached yet another mind blowing milestone on Friday. The game from developer Markus "Notch" Persson has now registered over 10 million users since the game was first released in alpha form back in late 2009. Persson noted the achievement on his official blog with no other comment. The game has continued to be popular among PC gamers even as it hasn't officially launched. Technically the game is still in its beta stage with its final official release due out in late 2011.

In related news, the latest 1.7 update for Minecraft has been released via the game's automatic downloader. The update is a rather minor one with the biggest new feature being that pistons can now be added to the Minecraft game world. However the next update to the game, 1.8, promises to be even bigger with Persson stating in a recent blog post, "The update is pretty big, and will change a lot of how Minecraft is played, focusing on making exploration and combat much more rewarding, and bringing in a bigger sense of adventure to the game." Among the changes and additions planned are a new lighting system, new terrain features and "some experimental new gameplay ideas."

In the meantime the game continues to not only add new registered uses but also still has people buying the full game in droves via the Minecraft web site. At the time of this news post the game has sold well over 2.6 million copies.
