Windows Live Messenger is the next-generation MSN Messenger. It has everything you already love about Messenger - your contact list, emoticons, and instant access to your friends via text, voice, and video - plus new ways to connect and share photos and documents effortlessly. It's faster than e-mail and is a great choice for conversations and the perfect alternative when you can't be there in person. As always, it's free to download Messenger and use most of its features.

Changes and additions in Windows Live Messenger 8.5 Beta:

* This version now requires Windows XP SP2, compared to previous versions requiring Windows XP SP1.

* In conjunction with the release of Windows Live 2.0, a new setup program was introduced.

* It is now installed to a 'Windows Live' folder in the drive where Windows is installed, and the shortcuts are placed in a 'Windows Live' folder in the Start Menu.

* All Messenger windows have a new look.

* A new 'bunny' emoticon has been added.

* Windows Live OneCare Family Safety integration was added.

* Updates can now be downloaded and installed through Microsoft Update, but only if you installed the update to version 8.5 Beta, released on June 21, 2007.

* Microsoft has blocked the sending and receiving of all .info links in conversations.

Updates can now be downloaded and installed through Microsoft Update, but only if you installed the update to version 8.5 Beta, released on June 21, 2007.

I'm currently using 8.5.1288.816 and haven't noticed anything in the Microsoft Update's listing of software to be downloaded. Maybe this is because it's actually NOT the beta but this then leads on to another query...

Normally I'd install over the old version (as it only adds files that are needed and modifies existing ones). Couple that with the Firewall changes for a new version accessing the Internet and I'd be good to go. However, this new version states that it will be installed in new folders, along with a new start menu folder. The version I'm using is already in a "Windows Live" section on the start menu so maybe it was the beta that did not do this, I can't recall.

As I'm a little worried about screwing things up on this end, I think I'm going to uninstall WLM completely and reinstall the new build independantly. I'm looking forward to the changes.

Is there a link for just the Messenger itself? I think the live link install makes you install other crap along with the messenge like Live One stuff.

Unless someone (or somewhere) uploads the main executable, I don't think this is possible. MS are only distributing the installer which is about 2.3MB. FileHippo, which usually hosts the full file doesn't even have this. Instead they're using the installer also; see here.

Alrighty I've begun installation and just as long as you actually read what it's asking you, no one should have any trouble. It asks you to put ticks in boxes (I believe the last version I installed did this as well... it's just been some time). Do you want a toolbar? No! Don't tick it then. Simple as that.

I uploaded the ad free version. Well as in no ads from external software but MSN have there own software ads within after install. Like before signing in and after the bottom part of your user list and when you chat theres ads at the bottom. Also this is just MSN itself only nothing else.

First off Trillian sucks imo. Secondly, if I were to use any all in one messenger app it would be Pidgin instead

Windows Live Messenger 8.5.1302.1018 (Patched AddOn Builder)

Info: Build your custom, patched (or default) Windows Live Messenger addon. MSI edited with tutorial by Shark007.

FGCBA (by n7Epilson) Requires .Net Framework 2.0

Cabarc.exe of Microsoft Cabinet Software Development Kit is required in C:\WINDOWS\system32 to create the cab but not the exe installer.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310618

If you only want the installer, don't use Cabarc.exe.

Cabarc.exe is only required for creating addon for nLite.

The cab will contain the silent exe installer, just unpack.

Note for Windows 2003 and XP x64.

This installer will work, use it since the web installer doesn't!
