Vista Death Watch

Microsoft has extended the life of Windows XP because Vista has simply not shown any life in the market. We have to begin to ask ourselves if we are really looking at Windows Me/2007, destined to be a disdained flop. By all estimates the number of Vista installations hovers around the number of Macs in use.

How did this happen? And what’s going to happen next? Does Microsoft have a Plan B? A number of possibilities come to mind, and these things must be considered by the company itself.

So what went wrong with Vista in the first place? Let’s start off with the elephant in the room. The product was overpriced from the outset. Why was it so expensive? What was special about it? All the cool and promised features of the original vision of Longhorn were gutted simply because it was beyond Microsoft’s capability to implement those features.

This failure to deliver what was promised—even after several delays in the product’s release, by the way—did nothing to excite anyone. It made the company look bad. It directly resulted in a no-confidence vote that was manifested in a lackluster reception and low sales. Microsoft should have scrapped the project two years ago and instead patched XP until it could deliver something hot.

To make things worse, there are too many versions. Exactly what is the point of that? Don’t we all just want Vista Ultimate? The other versions seem like a way to maybe save money for some users who cannot afford to get the real thing. You can be certain this version glut results only in complaints about what each variation is missing.

yeah...the only noticeable thing about vista was it's Aero visual style, other than that nothing intrigued me about it

I use a stripped out version of XP and won't use anything else other than a stripped out version of Vista.

...There was one version of a stripped out Vista which got released on ThePirateBay but seems to be unavailable unfortunately.

Why dont u create ur own Stripped version of Vista...

All the stripped versions are done by vLite

There should be a new version of vLite coming within a week

i try Vista Ultimate for 2 months(2007 sept-oct), in dual boot.

i use XP pro since...

Good...

...the aero effect is good to look at

...the widget bar was fun, with the clock, ram + processor widget, and everest ultimate plugin with some temp

...on the left panel of explorer, i was able to set link to folders i use often. this was very useful.

...Vista seem to handle ram better

note...most Vista good point are...cosmetic!

BAD...

...Vista TrustedInstaller.exe taking 100% cpu everytime he decide to, whatever i do, many times each hour.

...calculing the time remaining...take a lot of time.

often, it take much more time to calculate the time to copy some files than to transfer them.

...very slow copy of files(calculating), even much slower copy in lan.

...error with burning program(ashampoo, nero, alcool, tmpgenc dvd author burning software) sometime...

calculating the time remaining...a few minutes and stop without burning anything.

...each 12 hours or less, Vista was denying any new connection with the web, using a torrent program or not.

i was connected to the web, and the current torrent transfer was still working, but no new connection available, with any program(firefox, etc), and utorrent was getting socket error. reboot correct the problem. another solution i found was to check for Windows update, and after maybe 10-15 tries, it connect and all was working again.

i can't recommand Vista to anyone.

too much bugs, and the slow transfer/copy of files and the calculating everything...are annoying.
