Epic Games are the latest to be hacked

Recommended Posts

It seems that a day doesn't go by without another big company being hacked and having data stolen. Previously it was Codemasters and now it appears as though Epic games has fallen victim to a hacking attempt, this time affecting their web site and forums.

This time, the only personal data taken was some email addresses and encrypted passwords. Although the passwords were encrypted, Epic does warn its users that weaker passwords could still be broken. To that end, they've taken the decision to reset everyone's password anyway, just in case. If you had an account on Epic's forum and you used the same password elsewhere, it may well be worth ensuring you change it immediately.

Tim Sweeny, CEO at Epic Games, had this to say -

Our Epic Games web sites and forums were recently hacked. We're working on getting them back up and running, and expect everything to be restored in a few days.

The hackers likely obtained the email addresses and encrypted passwords of forum users. Plain text passwords weren't revealed, but short or common passwords could be obtained by brute-force attack. Therefore, we're resetting all passwords. If you have an account on the Epic Games forums, you can request to receive your new password by email it to the address we have on file for you.

The Unreal Developer Network (UDN) has not been compromised. None of our web sites ask for, or store, credit card information or other sensitive customer data.

We're sorry for the inconvenience, and appreciate everyone's patience as we get our servers back under control.

The various hacking attempts going around at the moment don't seem to be letting up and well known hacker group LulzSec have even promised to hack Sony yet again later on today.
