fighting poverty in india

BANGALORE, India — Manohar Lakshmipathi does not own a computer.

In fact, in India workmen like Mr. Manohar, a house painter, are usually forbidden to touch clients’ computers.

So you can imagine Mr. Manohar’s wonder as he sat in a swiveling chair in front of a computer,

dictating his date of birth, phone number and work history to a secretary.

Afterward, a man took his photo. Then, with a click of a mouse, Mr. Manohar’s page popped onto the World Wide Web,

the newest profile on an Indian Web site called Babajob.com.

Babajob seeks to bring the social-networking revolution popularized by Facebook and MySpace

to people who do not even have computers — the world’s poor.

And the start-up is just one example of an unanticipated byproduct of the outsourcing boom:

many of the hundreds of multinationals and hundreds of thousands of technology workers

who are working here are turning their talents to fighting the grinding poverty that surrounds them.

so he is using his clients computers to do this? i gotten the feeling he wasnt using the internet cafe places if they got them there. this is going to help him find a job? networking with real people in real space would help him more then any webpage ever would.

lets see over a billion in india. how many are stuck in their lowest caste system? any if some of them had a webpage one could actually find that person on it? i dont think so. word of mouth is their best job maker. better yet have a couple of them form local companies to get more of the market in their area.

india other opition is to go on a land grab to the east. take back what was once india would be a nice start. leave the west indias to the pakistans and afgans. if only they had not stop the first time in their history when they was the only known superpower of the world back then. things could been interesting.
