Microsoft offers free Xbox 360 to students who buy a Windows PC

Microsoft wants to sell more PCs with its Windows 7 operating system and they have come up with a way to encourage students to pick up a new PC for learning. In a new post on the Windows Experience blog site, Microsoft revealed that starting on May 22, students in the US who purchase a Windows 7 PC from select retailers that costs $699 or higher will get a free Xbox 360 console with the 4 GB hard drive. No, you won't be getting the Xbox 360 with the 250 GB hard drive nor will it contain the Kinect motion controller camera. It also doesn't come with a subscription to the Xbox Live Gold online service. However, student will still be getting a free game console that normally costs about $200.

The retailers that will participate in the deal include Dell.com, HP.com and Microsoftstore.com. Purchasing the PC via the online stores will work if you have an .edu email address. If you prefer to buy your PCs the old fashioned way by walking into a store or if you don't have an .edu email you can take your student ID into a Best Buy store or a Microsoft Store retail location. The special offer is scheduled to end on September 3 in the US. The special student deal will also be offered in France and Canada but no dates were announced.

We have to wonder if Microsoft is pushing this new deal to students who might be thinking about purchasing an iPad 2 instead of a PC for their educational needs.

Looking to buy a Windows PC and also a Xbox 360? How about owning both for the price of one? Microsoft have announced a promotional deal for students in United States of America or Canada where a complimentary Xbox 360 4GB slim game console worth $199.99 is given with the purchase of a Windows 7 PC at price of $699 or more.

Microsoft published the promotion on its Windows Experience blog, and states any Windows 7 PC, including desktop, notebook computer, laptop or even netbook (though its price unlikely to exceed $699) is eligible for the free Xbox 360 4GB console at no cost and no string attached. Microsoft has provided some recommendation to make the choice easier – HP Pavillion DM4, a ultra-thin (at 1″) and ultra light laptop, Dell Inspiron 14r, or the Samsung Series 9, a computer that has been described as looking like it is about to rocket off the runway.

According to windows team, starting from May 23 if you have a .edu email address you can buy any kind of PC through the participating retailers including Dell.com, HP.com or Microsoft Store. If you don’t have a .edu address or prefer to walk into a store, take your Student ID into Best Buy or any Microsoft retail Store.

Microsoft is attacking two fronts with the promotion. Firstly, Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) which gathered all the bad publicity lately due to its online gaming platform, PlayStation Network (PSN) was down after been hacked. Secondly, the promo is widely believe to sweeten the deal for students to purchase a Windows PC over Macintosh system (i.e. iMac or MacBook running Mac OS X), which started to gain market share and popularity in recent years. The early days computing experience of a person will likely shape his or her preference or choice in future.

The free Xbox 360 4GB with Windows 7 PC purchase program starts from May 22, 2011 in the US and ends at September 3, 2011 or while stocks last.

The promotion also available for Canadian or French students at a later date. For Canada, the free Xbox 360 4GB offer only valid for new select HP PC with Windows 7 which priced at CAD $599 or more and purchased at participating Best Buy or Future Shop locations across Canada starting from May 27, 2011.
