nsane.forums
Over the past several months a series of domain name seizures by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) made headlines across the Internet.Under the flag of “Operation In Our Sites†the authorities shut down a dozen file-sharing and streaming sites, as well as close to 80 sites selling counterfeit goods. On the majority of these domains, the authorities have now decided to run an anti-piracy announcement to honor yesterday’s World Intellectual Property Day.“To coincide with World Intellectual Property Day, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) has launched a new public service announcement (PSA) that aims to raise awareness of the economic impact of IP theft,” they announced. The authorities can “use” the domains for this campaign because the previous owners did not file an appeal. This means that the domains have fallen into the hands of the U.S. Government.“If no petitions or claims are filed, the domain names become property of the U.S. government. Since “Operation In Our Sites” began, 65 domain names have been forfeited using this process. Other domain names are still in the administrative forfeiture process,” the authorities explain.Interestingly enough, the video that appears on the domains is an anti-piracy campaign, targeted at those who download illegal movies. However, of the 100+ domains that were seized over the past year, only one (torrent-finder.com) was linked by the authorities to illegal movie downloads. But this falls flat, since Torrent-Finder is actually one of the few sites that appealed the seizure of its domain, and thus not showing the video. Most of the domains that now link to the video have nothing to do with ‘piracy,’ but were selling counterfeit goods. Something entirely different according to the law, but that doesn’t seem to bother the authorities. If we have to take a guess, we’d say the anti-piracy video was probably put up at the MPAA’s request. View: Original Article
Nemesis
"world intellectual property day"? WTF is that supposed to mean to anybody not at the head of a fortune 500 company or making tons of money off the projects? i mean, gimme a break. we should be having a international "world peace day" ( 4 20 doesn't count ^_^ ) or another day of real importance instead all I see is a day was created so the big wigs can say MINE, ALL MINE and dont forget it... Im so sick and tired of all these bastards, they should be shot, gutted, and have their head paraded around on a stick and tied to a post so we can throw tomatoes at it.Conversely we should have a "do not buy anything" day to protest these attitudes, hell even a "do not buy anything month". Lets take Apples debacle, they refuse to tell us much about anything, cram their "ideology" on how technology should be and then track us users. what of our intellectual property hmmm? I for one hate big business. speaking of property.... if I buy something why cant I do anything with it other than what they tell me to, i would rather borrow it from them and give it back, seeing as how its not actually mine anyway.lets take music for example, if the artists were selling their music independently i would probably buy it instead of stealing it. i pirate most things largely due to the fact that I don't like big businesses. and movies... I go and see alot of movies at the theater because its a cheap Friday night out for me and my girlfriend and i cant afford a to build a theater in my home. That's all the money these "creatures" are going to get from me if I can help it. I WONT however pay 30 bucks for a disc that costs them 30 cents to make. They are already making nothing but profit when it comes out of theaters anywayOne other point. Why is it that when I finally do buy a game (dragon age: origins ultimate edition) I have to edit some of the files so the DLC's will work properly anyway and with a key I paid for? fuck them im not buying it if their shit doesn't work properly  . the only reason i bought it was for good karma.Don't get me wrong, Im all for copyrighting/patenting new technologies (military, medical ect) scientific ideas and the like as well. however the media industry, all media. has already pigged out and are asking for more much like like how Homer needs his doughnuts. my 2 cents. im no writer but sometimes its nice to vent. any thoughts?/rant
