A massive earthquake has hit the north-east of Japan, triggering a tsunami that has caused extensive damage.

Japanese television showed cars, ships and even buildings being swept away by a vast wall of water after the 8.9 magnitude earthquake.

The quake has sparked fires in several areas including Tokyo, and numerous casualties are feared.

It struck about 250 miles (400km) from the capital at a depth of 20 miles. There have been powerful aftershocks.

The tremor at 1446 local time (0546 GMT). Seismologists say it is one of the largest earthquakes to hit Japan for many years.

The tsunami warning was extended to the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, the Pacific coast of Russia and Hawaii.

Tsunami waves hit Japan's Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, officials said.

Japan's NHK television showed a massive surge of debris-filled water sweeping away buildings, cars and ships and reaching far inland.

The earthquake also triggered a number of fires, including one at an oil refinery in Ichihara city in Chiba prefecture near Tokyo.

There were reports of about 20 people injured in Tokyo after the roof of a hall collapsed onto a graduation ceremony.

Bullet train service to northern Japan was halted, rapid transit in Tokyo was suspended and some nuclear power plants automatically shut down.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan said there had been no radiation leaks.

news update ---

>>Toyota, Honda, Nissan Close Factories After Quake

Japan today experienced one of the most powerful earthquakes in its history. Though the extent of the damage is still not known, companies with factories based in the country are starting damage assessments and some have opted to shut down operations as a result of the destruction.

>>Radiation leak confirmed at quake-hit nuclear plant in Japan

Radioactive cesium leak has been registered at the first unit of the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan, which was badly hit by a powerful earthquake on March 10, the Kyodo news agency said on Saturday.

People from nearby areas have been evacuated.

Increased radiation levels were registered at the Fukushima nuclear plant in northeast Japan as power shortages caused the reactor to overheat, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) said.

In some parts of the plant, radiation levels rose up to 1,000 times above the norm, and are about eight times above the norm outside the station, the Kyodo news agency said on Saturday.

Until now, Japanese officials have been making controversial comments on the accident, mostly denying the leak.

Japan has more than 54 nuclear energy units in operation, and about one quarter of all energy produced in the country comes from nuclear power plants.

An 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck about 373 km (232 miles) northeast of Tokyo on Friday afternoon, sparking a series of tsunamis. Police said at least 413 people were dead, 1,000 injured and hundreds went missing. Several aftershocks occurred shortly after the initial quake. The strongest was measured at 7.1 on the Richter scale.

there has been a melt down. dang it.

6 are heavy damaged before this melt down on one of them.

it feels like an old SIM CITY game . you get the earthquake and now you deal with the aftereffects or power out, fires and power plants. just need a monster or two now.
