Splashtop has announced in a press release that its Linux-based quick start operating system, previously only available as a quick start option in OEM machines, notably netbooks and notebooks, for the first time will be directly available to end users. This means, for example, that a Windows PC can have the Splashtop OS installed, and at boot time the user will be able to choose which OS will start. If the user only wants to browse the web, or use email, then it is claimed that choosing Splashtop will be the fastest option.

The downloaded OS will be Splashtop-branded and known as Splashtop OS, version 1.0; previously OEMs have been able to give it their own branding, such as ASUS that branded it as "Express Gate" on high-end motherboards. Splashtop comes with support for a "wide array of PC models", and features little in the way of application support. It has a Chromium-based web browser and also Bing search. It also comes with certain key plugins, such as Adobe Flash, pre-installed.

It is claimed that this allows a user to be able to access the web or "start typing a search query within seconds of turning on their computer." The browser also features one-click access to the Chrome Web Store, enabling easy access to "thousands of web apps, games, extensions and themes."

The Splashtop OS, which is installable from Windows, is available to download; the source code is also available to download and is licensed under the GPL and LGPL.

Technically, yes. But in real, no. Why? Cause having no Windows on the disk wont allow you to install this. You got to have any version of Windows to install it. I am yet to download this version (I had Asus Expressgate) to know whether the offer a boot disk or something than it's a different game altogether, but is unlikely.

But, if you have SplashTop installed on your hard drive, but suddenly your OS (XP/7/Ubuntu/etc) isn't working or loading, then yes. It works without any need for any OS whatsoever. :)

Personally, I don't find it too useful as I haven't got a need for it. But I do like to keep things as a backup if I cannot boot. :)

As per one article I read, the new Splastop only takes 300MB HDD space.

At my internet speed 300 mb without disconnection is impossible. :frusty:

Sorry. I tried my best. Even tried going into restricted parts of their site and it's hoster. But somehow I cannot get an offline installer.

But the good news is, the online installer wont stop or break a download after a DC. I get a DC almost every hour. So don't worry, it will resume the download after the DC. ;)

Well, I was able to get my hands on whole installer in TEMP. But 300MB is too much for my connection on just 25KB/s UL speed and regular DCs.

I ran it. But it's just like Google OS here. I see no apps or anything. Just Chrome window, taskbar and tray icons. I may have missed something cause I ran it for 5 mins or so. Asus Express Gate was far more better than this. Again, I may have missed something.

Anyway, I think you'll be able to run it just fine.

Just a chrome ( sorry, chromium) browser. nothing else. I don't think its beneficial for us. Because, 'nsaners' can't end up in just random surfing. We need a complete work environment.

PS: I already tested it. If no other people requests you, no need to take the pain of uploading offline installer.
