Egypt shuts down the internet, people ask Anonymous for help

Information is a powerful tool and according to the Twitter feed #Jan25, that tool has been shut down in Egypt amidst major protests over the past few days. Social media sites have been used in Egypt (and in Tunisia last week) to coordinate the protestors so the thought is that without a central spot to gather information, the protests may die down. When that didn't work, the country decided to block all traffic in and out of their borders in an effort to stop the protests.

Initially the country simply shutdown access to sites like Twitter and Facebook, places where protestors were gathering to coordinate their activities. Unfortunately for the Egyptian government, people are generally tech savvy nowadays and have found workarounds to the blockade. One such workaround was using Blackberry for web access, but that too had allegedly been disabled today according to the LA Times. Although this may have helped slow down access to some of the data, the use of proxies, VPNs and the like can generally be used to get around such restrictions.

In response to the government's shutdown of sites like Twitter and Facebook, the BBC is reporting that hacktivist group Anonymous had launched a denial of service attack against the Egyptian interior ministry's web page. The group, infamous for their DDoS attacks against companies they perceived as being anti-Wikileaks, has been providing information on bypassing the various social network blocks. The Egyptian government one-upped the attackers by shutting down the country's internet. This must have been one of the things the United States government had in mind when they introduced legislation that would give the president similar power.

Now that the country is dark it will be very difficult to know what is happening within its borders. It is unknown how long this blackout will last and what the ramifications will be.

Update: An anonymous source within Egypt has sent an open letter to Reddit, requesting support from the group. They are suggesting a boycott of global corporations such as Vodafone.

This started over something stupid didn't it? Power-monging and then this... Really I think they need a new Ruler.. I mean since 1981.. too long for someone .. they need a fresh perspective because this one is showing his mental baggage... his age... There is a loss of common sense when it comes to that.. While people of course say its supposed to be worth the Experience factor.. but if a balance is not achieved then... what use will any of it be?

Probably with a monarchist point-of-view .. the actions were perceived as coordinations of treason against the government... and therefore blocked... I think a lot can be lost in translation.. and this is purely speculative as well..

I mean it's like grounding your children at home.. You say .. 'no TV!'.. so they hit the computer and go watch 'Bleach'.... So you pull the cables out of the side of the house... Just to prove who is boss..

The again .. as his personal website was attacked his decision may be quite that of one of being attacked as a country and is a crime against the government as well as a security measure to ensure intellectual property is secured... :dunno:

It can be in how it is said, how it is done... and can be in what it will concern.. but no man is the master of that what is not to be controlled or his own.. try and he will cut off your hand.. or anything else you try to use... :)

EDIT: In a way I would wonder how much more efficient people were without those services.. and chatter... Maybe the view of some of these things are not in any way positive in the effect it has as a mass dynamic .. reflecting upon the countries productivity... and other areas.

we hate you , you are not democratic .... we like your policy [friend of jewish state ?! ].... you are democratic

This is insane ... but I'm sure he(Mubarak) wont go away coz USA likes his political way... sharing israel the gas , killing Palestinian

who by any fact should be his brothers and making poverty the theme in Egyptian community so they cant do a change

shout out to all the real free people who are calling for their freedom in the street ... not for anyone else

News showed the streets to be quite a mess.. and even the journalist have been attacked by the Government officials...

The straw that broke the camels back...

As far as being democratic.. it takes a lot more than that to be democratic.. diplomatic maybe a tinge.. but nowhere near it... as you stated..

The SAME things happened to iranian people when current cruel gov. felt is in REAL danger one year ago(about Green movements over the country)

we had no Internet, Mobile antenna, SMS service and nothing else in public communications!

you know...

It worked for gov.

communications is all

These things happen when dictators and Marxists are in power, the people won't have a say in what happens. It could happen in democracy too, just that the gov't uses any means necessary to trick the citizenry into wanting to be oppressed and be stripped of their freedom. The system delivery is different but the end game is the same.

Pay your taxes and be a good sheep, then feel great about your privilege to vote for a new face to carry out the same old strategy.

Countries only go to war for economic gains, that is why USA will not liberate the people who actually need liberation, they will not fight for those who cannot defend themselves, they leave the charity work for nato and other weak organizations. Don't think I have no experience with how American military works, when my country had its coup, US Army troops arrived not to help us but to guard the oil reserves, what a thing. They buy alot of oil from my country and so they came to secure their interests. They are not anyone's saviour, unless you have something they want.

I think they are democratic presidential, I'm not sure how much weight the prime minister holds. In any case if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it has to be a duck pretending to be a chicken. yea that made no sense, I don't know the expression.

What I'm trying to say is they have elections and stuff but the leader is acting like Stalin, lol.

sounds alot like what china is doing in north korea. Their statement to their people is similar "protecting economic resources". at least that's what a friend in Hong Kong told me.

if the country is ruled by a dictator then it is a fascist country?

not necessarily. In this case though id say yes.

@myiddisbb

actually this is what i meant ... democracy is a game they throw at people especially in the middle east to get rid of some dictators that doesn't support us [example saddam husain .. USA supported him for so long especially against iran , and then when he started to be lil bit of his own ... they kicked him out ]

on the other hand they support those dictators .. coz they somehow are not only dictators to us but also mean dictators

they ruined our country ...and they support our enemies

look at the streets now . everyone wants him out ...even in almost all arab countries we want him out ....But

USA last night said . they want mubarak to do some revisions

they still support him ...and that's why ?! because he's a strategic goal to their policy

end of my discussion

you are a good dictator if you are obeying what USA said / need

You are not good if you don't

It's obvious the US is the most evil of them all (I'm not being sarcastic). But don't forget that you can't always keep blaming someone else, far away. At some point, it is time for action (like in Egypt). Co-ordinate your actions before the governments know about it, be covert and instead of demanding the retreat of your fascist ruler, just make sure he retreats (you all know what I mean). Show the Americans they can't push you around (but for everyone's sake please don't start a war, wars are stupid).

If something bad is happening, in Western democracies as well, people always complain. And I understand why people don't decide to whack the president and the rest of the government over here, because it's just small things that go wrong. But all everyone does is complain, don't complain, fix things. The first step towards being powerless is thinking you don't have power. If something is wrong, fix it.

And for Egypt: who are the police? They are you. Who are the military? They are you. Who are the air force? They are you. Make use of other media to get your president to f**k off; walk into a TV station and hijack a channel (don't do it V for Vendetta style though, they'll just shoot you :P), or a radio station.

if you go against a dictator it is against the law so I don't see how you can hijack a channel and stay alive lol. The US is a superpower so they don't care/want to help smaller countries. If the country has the resources which the US needs then they will help them which in my opinion is unethical. Powerful countries need to get past the profit part and help people from small countries.
