One Cannabis Joint As Bad As Five Cigarettes

Since ya guys love discussions on weed here ya go.

Smoking one cannabis joint is as harmful to a person's lungs as having up to five cigarettes, according to research published on Tuesday.

Those who smoked cannabis damaged both the lungs' small fine airways, used for transporting oxygen, and the large airways, which blocked air flow, the researchers said.

It meant cannabis smokers complained of wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness, the study by experts at the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand found.

The researchers tested 339 people -- those who smoked only cannabis, those who smoked tobacco, those who smoked both and non-smokers.

The study found only those who smoked tobacco suffered from the crippling lung disease emphysema, but cannabis use stopped the lungs working properly.

"The extent of this damage was directly related to the number of joints smoked, with higher consumption linked to greater incapacity," said the authors of the report published in the medical journal Thorax.

"The effect on the lungs of each joint was equivalent to smoking between 2.5 and five cigarettes in one go."

The British government is considering whether cannabis should be reclassified as a more serious drug because of the dangers associated with stronger strains.

"The danger cannabis poses to respiratory health is consistently being overlooked," said Helena Shovelton, Chief Executive of the British Lung Foundation.

"Smoking a joint is more harmful to the lungs than smoking a cigarette and we have just banned people from doing that in public places because of the health risks."

Last week British researchers said using marijuana increased the risk of developing a psychotic illness such as schizophrenia.

Atleast we will not suffer from crippling lung disease emphysema ;)

Lol, no, you misunderstood it, what they mean is that they have banned smoking a cancer stick in public places because of the health risks. Anyways, this is all a crock of shit, so is the "pot 2.0 is dangerous" story as well as the "weed drives you nuts" story, fuck their lies.

they originally reclassified it so that they can get crime figures down on serious offenses. It was just a ploy, with hardly any interest in the damage it can cause. A lot of happy people at the same time though. Pharmaceutical drugs are worse in my opinion.

they're completely mis-leading people here, the effects they're referring to are result of the resins and other heated particles entering the lungs (smoke) and clinging to your lungs after cooling. therefor the THC potency of the weed has NO direct influence on the health risks of smoking. it's kinda funny how they're blaming chest tightness on a muscle RELAXER any ways (which is what Delta-9 THC is classified as) :ganja:

any long term smoker knows this already and will tell you smoking out of a bong or vaporizer will reduce the risks dramatically (which they don't mention). i think i've said all this before... :(

edit: actually, THC is classified as a psychoactive drug, but muscle relaxation is still on of the more prominent side effects...

yea, and u can also smoke (inhale is better put, i think) the thc extracted from the weed as vapors from a tin foil, that will skip the lung affecting diseases 4 good ;) the paranoia is still there, i think :ganja: :ganja: :ninja:

Exactly, see no matter what kind of lies they try to spread, weed can NOT hurt, kill, harm, you, nor can it make you crazy, stupid, hyper, or w/e else you can think of, plus theres dangerous stuff in cancer sticks that dont exist in weed, (like Trev0r269 pointed out). Also, something i want to point out, im sure its been asked before, but im still gonna ask anyways, why the HELL, is weed still illegal? Actually wtf made it illegal in the first place? Cancer Sticks damage your body, and it is a known fact yet cancer sticks are legal, same with alcohol, it harms your body in the long run yet it's legal, but does weed, no yet its illegal, also it makes me sick when they say stupid shit like "Weed is illegal because it alters the way you think as well as your reaction time" well i got news for you, SO DOES ALCOHOL! but alcohol is perfectly legal, just not weed for some reason..... Is there ever going to be a time when people will finally pull their head outta their asses and legalize weed here (America), what i've never understood is that if they are only "illegalizing" weed because "its dangerous" then what they need to do is instead let the "consumer" themselves decide if it is dangerous (in their opinion) if they think weed would be dangerous to them, then they'll just "pass it up" and if they don't think it'll be dangerous, then they'll "smoke it all up", point is let the people decide for themselves if weed would be dangerous or not, instead of "illegallizing" weed and making everyone (in America) suffer. /end rant....

Its illegal because back in the 20's (yeah, sounds right I think) there was a fear that minorities smoke weed, and rape white women. Thats nutshell part I. Part II, I think has to do more with our society (melting pot, whatever) is mainly based on christian and greek-roman ideals. Just think how in Europe, they drink, so now in America (because our country was founded by Europeans essentially) we drink and anything that goes against that norm gives these straight people, "the fear"

Enough people think that it really will ruin your life more than alcohol (riiiight). Anyone can abuse anything and it will hinder their life (chocolate). Enough people also believe that growing hemp for textiles will somehow lead to the production of marijuana (which is the govt made and taxed, omg imagine the $. I want to get a pack of Marb-Highs @ dairy mart). Then, there are the idiots who believe because something is 'illegal' then it must be bad for you, because how is Uncle Sam wrong?

Whatever...such a backwards country.

well it's put like this, only in the USA, in one state coloardo they moved the drug thing down to a less of an offence but the people are not imune from the federal law though. so go figure, they mean one thing then they mean something else. as i said at the start only in the USA.
