NFO 2.0?

Recommended Posts

Well we all know (or should for that matter), that NFO's have been around for many many years.

These files, commonly associated with those in "The Scene" for distributing content via Usenet, BitTorrent etc... are the modern-day "Readme.txt" containing information about the file(s), quality of file(s) and even contact details should the releaser(s) wish it.

Imagine my suprise when, for the second time this week I've had the pleasure of opening up a Flash-based NFO file from different groups. The file size is obviously the biggest giveaway, aside from the fact that it has it's own unique icon and an executable file extension (.exe).

Is this where we are now heading? Is this the new NFO standard that is seemingly becoming more popular?

Have a look for yourself:

NFO 2.0 ???

As you will see... very flashy indeed, but the information is far limited than a standard NFO.

Maybe this is just a few groups who are simply testing it out?

Very interesting to say the least.

saw it for the first time for half a year ago looks nice if you open (the one i saw was fullscreen and moving), but it also looks suspicious and .exe can contain anything, so i hope they're not going to make it standard

This won't be standard...

0day sets the pace and most of them still use the .diz file which was before the .nfo...

A team I'm close with in www scene is abandoning the .diz and looking for something new to replace the .nfo.

The problem with .exes is some people won't run them b/c warez hosting sites often injected worms, trojans, and viruses into legitimate releases.

And proprietary formats like .swf are more likely to be used for releases...soon keygens will be html and swf instead of packed .exes which false alert AV programs.

However, this is also a problem for those who don't have flash installed...

Not true, the new CORE releases I download daily all have the core10k.exe stuff as addition to the NFO. Sometimes it even replaces the NFO. And the releases *I* download are of good quality (t.leech etc).

Yeah there's a few groups who release those small .exe files ~100kB size wise. They normally have that midi music playing and such.

On another note, did anyone ever see that small video that was 75kB in size that ran for like 15 mins. I used to have a copy but I lost it some years ago. It was simply amazing. I'll see if I can dig it up from somewhere.

The core101k.exe is a built in NFO reader...

It also doubles as an authenticator. Why does CORE do this?

They are a VERY LONG standing elite team and are tired of warez sites messing with their releases and adding/editing/hacking them for redistribtution.

And this .exe format is NOT standard, nor will it ever be.

In fact, the .exe is going to become less and less popular...because of x64, vista, osx, linux etc and virtualization.

It's better and easier to code in cross platform languages especially thanks to software like Parallels, VirtualPC, and VMWare.

It's just a few clicks away to run multiple OSes at the same time or generate a set of serials for say XP inside of OSX and vice versa.

Crackers are all at heart, coders...and they love to push their limitations and skills and especially love it when their work gets in the hands of more people.

P.S. Tiny, tiny file sizes are a showcase of a programmers/coders true skill...and they have an entire scene for that called: DEMO.

If u r still thinking about the size (which I have been for years) heres the answer..

Basically with hard work. code is manually size optimized. 3d models are stored as object type and neccessary properties only (no triangle mesh), all textures are generated, 2d artworks are 1bit black & white images and the music is tracked from small samples.

Zeus it was none of those above. Seriously the video demo I saw was out of this world. It came out a few years back (maybe 2002~). Full 3D artifacts were included as it utilised either DirectX or the OpenGL engine from your PC. The music was also continuous.

From what I can remember... and believe me I've looked all over for this thing... It was definately German in origin. Words were placed here and there in the video. It had some sort of "castle" theme, with the colours coming to life through what looked like coloured glass. Music was very clear.

I'm going to give up one afternoon to search for this properly. I just wish I would of kept it.
