<img src="http://nsanedown.com/images/logos/VBox.png" class="logo" alt="VirtualBox" title="VirtualBox" />VirtualBox is an application installed on an existing host operating system; within this application, additional operating systems can be loaded and run, each with its own virtual environment. For example, several Linux distributions can be hosted on a single machine running Windows XP; likewise, XP and Vista can run on a machine running Linux, and so on. There is a free for personal or evaluation use proprietary version and a GNU General Public License (GPL) version.

Well, no BSOD this time.

But somehow my Ubuntu is not booting. Shows a page where got to select whether to boot in recovery mode or memtest86 it. But after that, it's just blinking line like cursor. :(

Maybe it decided to act like windows because it doesn't get booted as much.. This should be easy to fix.. probably a settings change or something since the upgrade.. I would double-check everything..

I did double check. Maybe I did something when I was in Ubuntu. Don't remember.

BTW, I wanna know if there's any easy way to see each and every host drive on the guest virtualbox OS? I read on their FAQ that it's possible but really dangerous. I wonder if there's a easy way to do so. The easy way is to share the folder thingy or something, but I wanna see all the drives.

I am not for sure about it.. I wanted to do the same thing with mine when I started trying to mod the system.. and I could not get it to work properly to see my EHD's.. about the time I started having all of the issues with the system freezes.. that were linked to my EHD's.. or some data buffer type issue..

I believe that the method is same even now. This is the one feature I'll love to see in VB. Infact, most important feature IMO. Like the way you attach a CD/DVD, same way it should allow you to attach all the drives as easy as possible.

Yeah, it would be nice... I think it has something to do with the differences in the types of hardware.. and the drivers.. ( HUGE pain in the ass though not to have this .. )

Have you had any issues with corrupted files and/or system freezes when accessing EHD's? Possibly when decompressing files? Especially large ones? There is a Fix available from Microsoft which is supposed to help address a problem... Like this.. I will have to come back with it if it seems similar.. it may help..

never froze while using kaspersky internet security.

might be conflict with ess firewall

Have you tried adding exclusions for the directories in which you have your VHD's? and have you checked your Riles and zones in ESS for invalid or duplicated entries pertaining to or occurring from the VB installation? ( I had several show up after the last ver. 3 upgrade.. AND You setup could be trying to scan the large VHD's internals.. However you may still have the other problem.. Does your system come to a full stop and leave no option but to do a hard reboot?

don't know about it

i got a popup asking whether to allow sharing or strict protection under zones

yesevery actions are performed after 5-10 secs after my mouse clickand when i shut down it only log offs and never shut down.

Riles is supposed to be Rules... typo.. sorry :) LOL.. I wouldn't know about it either..

Okay, what I would be willing to bet is that you problem is most likely being caused by a possibility of a couple of things. The first I would address is ESS's settings.. In the second screenshot below ( certain areas I have Obscured for Privacy ) you will see an area called Rules and zones. After VB upgraded this last time.. When it installed the new drivers.. which I had turned on for my connections, there were a total of four extra duplicated entries in the area.. and it asked me about the Sharing or Strict Protection.. because these new entries were created. The thing is that - especially when its already installed - these have already been made.. so your ESS is actually having to work with what it is seeing as several connections at once.. but in truth it is only ONE.. more scanning more filtering.. and your laying your protections services on top of one another. I deleted the extras.. and then rebooted...Which brings me to the next thing.. When you comb through your settings in ESS, you will find that the parameters for your Threat sense engine can be overlapped by turning on certain forms of ..and areas to be scanned. When you do this.. and you protection tried to scan these files it comes across all the time.. every time something interacts.. It tried to do them all at once... Like running three or four media players to play the same song at one.. LOL... so you have a huge spike in your resource and problems in the efficiency of which it runs. SO this area within your setup needs to be addressed and I recommend going through this area and settings it up properly..

The first screenshot I took is of the Exclusions area... ( the one you see is not full in context but gets its point across by example ) You can set directories up in this area to not be scanned and files to be removed from scanning.. This will keep ESS from scanning these files when it comes across them, you load them in memory, or when they are used by other areas in the system... There is a list of directories that should be added by default made by Microsoft... Search for 'recommend exclusions' at their site... ( I may come back with a link if I find it ) and you should have an immediate result.. I also have added a few files which I noticed are constantly being accessed and scanned.. leaving ESS constantly active... I have double checked what they are and they can be a great help in freeing up system resources for other things and allowing ESS to run as it should with less time.. and keeps of course the scanning from overlapping, or your system from freezing up because it is trying to scan large files while they are in use or being accessed.

In my VM's I never use protection.. instead I have added ESS's Firewall driver to the connection which it uses to connect to the Internet and I use Web Access Protection as well.. I know that the VM is clean to begin with in this case.. It technically would not be required to install protection in the VM because all of the actions going on are actually being scanned by ESS.. including all of the Internet and network data.. so again you would create an overlap here... if you had installed protection on the VM's...

I have added exclusions in mine for the main program.. and the directories which contain the full 4 - 19 GB VHD's... I do not allow PAE.. because I think it actually allows the host machine to be directly interacted with by VB.. I have also checked and doubled checked the amount of RAM and Video GPU alloted to be something that works well with my setup.. it can different from system to system.. but overloading your system can cause this problem as well..

Very important to keep things like this in mind or you will be able to setup an efficient VM..

there was an duplicate entry in rules and zones editor

i was looking for zone under trusted zone not looking in rules and zones editor.

so i have to delete VB zone every time when i will upgrade to new version?

i have added my vhd image directories to exclusions

Well the last update I did it started this.. so I am not for sure .. and I have not had the time to upgrade to 4 yet... Something new with it. It would be advisable to check it.. especially if you get a Popup from ESS asking about the new additional detected network..

as i know it never do, even for vmware..
