Jeff Jones, Microsoft’s Security Strategy Director, says that Windows Vista is more secure than Linux and Mac OS X. He thinks so because he compared number of vulnerabilities patched during last six months.

Jones informs that in Vista there were 12 flaws four of which were critical (his list do not include the last patch day).

During the first six months after its release there were 214 flaws, including 62 critical, in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.

In comparison during the same period of time in Ubuntu 6.06 there were 74 holes eliminated, 28 of them critical. Novell was not better. In SuSE Enterprise Desktop 10 the company pateched 123 flaws, 44 critical.

Apple found 60 bugs in Mac OS X 10.4, of them 18 were critical.

Jones said also Windows XP was better than other procuts. Microsoft eliminated 36 vulnerabilities, however 23 of them critical. According to Jones Vista and XP also have an advantage when considering the number of vulnerabilities discovered but not yet eliminated.

In his opinion the good results could be attributed to the fact that Vista is the firs Microsoft’s operating system that was entirely developed within framework called Security Development Lifecycle (SDL).
