Steve Ballmer will once again be making his appearance at CES 2011 and is rumored to be announcing new slate devices with a new interface and may be demoing Windows 8. The rumors speculate that Ballmer will unveil several devices that are supposed to compete with the iPad.

According to the New York Times, Balmer will unveil several devices made from Dell, Samsung and several others onstage. Most interesting in the rumors is the information about a new layered interface to the Windows 7 platform. The insider states, "people familiar with this device said it will run the Windows 7 operating system when in landscape mode, but will also have a layered interface that will appear when the keyboard is hidden and the device is held in a portrait mode. "

The rumored Samsung device is also said to be similar size to that of the iPad, the device will not be as thin but will contain a unique slide out keyboard. This comes in contrast to Apple's iPad that only has a virtual keyboard.

Also mentioned is that Ballmer may be showing off Windows 8 onstage too. While nothing else was mentioned about what we could see if Windows 8 is shown off, the rumors and speculation are setting a high bar for Microsoft.

Sigh... it seems like only yesterday we were happy Win7 worked so much better than Vista and embraced it as a XP upgrade... now what? Another one? Give the releases some space...

At least we don't have to buy this one, like with the CPUs and GPUs... especially the videocards are releasing generation after generation like crazy with no real improvements. Man, it used to be understood that new generations will bring revolutionary features, nowadays they just represent the growing (endless!) money hunger of the big companies.

Did I already say sigh? Nevermind, sigh again...

Marik the cloud is inevitable... if not today then tomorrow. I hate it too... we will most probably lose the freedom we have now... but who knows? Remains to be seen.

From what I can see, it's like 3D HDTVs, not everyone one wants to buy it or can afford it but the manufacturers keep on investing in it, in hope of earning more and more money. IMO, Cloud OS is going to PHAIL at some point of time and Chrome OS being it's first example.

Apparently, that's how XP still lasts even today. Too much space given, due to Vista's development at that time. We don't want 7 be the new XP that will soon be flooded with vulnerabilities and whatnot.

What "whatnot" ? You can use XP safely right now, and it was pretty safe to use in it's lifetime. Many computer savvy guys used it skipping Vista and were very happy with it, some are still using it. I agree it's not cool that the pause between OS-es is 10 years, but 5 is OK for me, not 2-3.

Improvements can be made via updates/service packs.

Hurry up windows 8 !!!

I really don't care about people rushing out and buying it wasting money that's what makes the world go around let them people do it.

@TOYO NO MORE UPDATES! LOL

Vista & 7 update thing is slow as hell - and forcing a user to reboot after an update is annoying.

To even showcase Windows 8 this soon would be a horrible idea! Cripes!! Can't we let corporate America and everyone else get on board with 7 for a few years, first? Damn. :frusty:

Windows 7, blah-blah-blah, Windows 7, blah-blah-blah-blah, Windows 7, blah-blah-blah -- Oh, look! pretty lights! <--{Windows 8}
