Bolt_Gundam510
Los Angeles – The Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (MPAA) which represents thesix major Hollywood film studios, today applauded the Dallas Police Department forexecuting search warrants at Big T’s Bazaar, a known haven for counterfeit goods. Thesearch led to the felony arrests of two suspects both for copyright infringement and one fornarcotics possession. Dallas police also seized more than 2,000 bootleg DVDs includingmovies still in theaters such as Shrek 3 and Ocean’s 13.“Movie piracy, which is prevalent in cities and towns all around the country, takes amajor toll on the film industry and reduces the economic benefits the industry brings in jobsand revenue,” said Mike Robinson, Vice President and Director of U.S. Anti-PiracyOperations for the MPAA.. “I commend the Dallas police for their work today. We willcontinue to work with law enforcement around the country to help limit the number ofillegal movies available on the streets.”The replication and distribution of illegal DVDs is highly lucrative and in many casescriminal networks use pirated DVD sales to support other kinds of criminal activity. Whenpeople buy counterfeit DVDs they are often also supporting criminals involved in a host ofother illegal activities such as narcotics or illegal gun sales, gang activity and more. The investigation which led to today’s enforcement actions was conducted by theDallas Police Department’s Southwest Interactive Community Policing Unit in conjunctionwith the MPAA.The MPAA and its member companies have a multi-pronged approach to fightingpiracy, which includes educating people about the consequences of piracy, taking actionagainst Internet thieves, working with law enforcement authorities around the world to rootout pirate operations and working to ensure movies are available legally using advancedtechnology.Source: MPAA PRESS {PDF}
