Company highlights features of web media platform

Microsoft has delivered the details on the next version of its Silverlight platform.

The company said in a blog posting that the next version of the web media tool would seek to further enable sites to deliver premium media services for users.

Among the new features in Silverlight will be support for GPU accelerated video decoding. The company believes that the new component will allow users to view HD video while significantly reducing strain on the CPU.

Silverlight 5 will also offer users the ability to slow playback speeds with automatic pitch correction, allowing users to slow video with distorting audio. Other new features include remote control support and power management components.

For developers, Silverlight 5 will offer improved out-of-browser support as well as new graphics components and better text and printing support.

"Silverlight 5 adds significant new features and capabilities, and enables developers to create premium media experiences and deliver rich applications across browsers, desktops and devices," wrote Microsoft developer division corporate vice president Scott Guthrie.

"We are really excited about the great new capabilities that Silverlight 5 will deliver, and look forward to getting your feedback."

Guthrie said that the first beta release of Silverlight 5 would arrive in the first half of 2011, with final release scheduled for some point in the second half of the year.

The development of Silverlight 5 comes at a pivotal time for it and other web media platforms. With the adoption of HTML 5, some companies have begun to question the need for media plug-ins such as Silverlight and Adobe's Flash.

In November, Microsoft said that it would be shifting the focus of Silverlight towards enabling software such as web-based client and business applications.
