IE9 Outruns Chrome 9 For The First Time

Microsoft’s IE9 team has posted a huge performance update for its IE9 browser. The Platform Preview 7, which came just one day after Mozilla indicated that Microsoft may have been cheating in the Sunspider benchmark, has claimed the crown in Webkit’s Sunspider benchmark.

Mozilla’s Rob Sayre posted an interesting analysis of Sunspider browser performance on Tuesday, highlighting some strange behavior of IE9, which indicated that Microsoft may have tweaked its browser specifically for at least one discipline in this JavaScript benchmark. He filed a bug with Microsoft’s IE team and Microsoft reacted with an update late last night.

You would think that the update may have decelerated IE9, but the contrary is the case. IE9 PP7 is the fastest browser in Sunspider we have ever recorded. The performance increased from 368 ms posted by IE9 Beta to 331 ms by IE9 PP6 and is now at 257 ms for IE9 PP7. It is a marginal advantage over the current Chrome 9 nightly build, which came in at 258 ms and even the most recent Opera 11.00 alpha, which scores 263 ms. However, the improvement is dramatic and shows that IE9 is in fact reaching for the top.

Firefox has suddenly dropped to the bottom again. Today’s build of Firefox 4 Beta 8-pre finished the Sunspider test in 305 ms. The difference between 250 and 300 ms are negligible in every day browsing, especially since JavaScript per4formance is just one component of the page loading speed. However, the crown in this prestigious race goes to IE9 for the very first time. If we remember that IE8′s Sunspider performance was more than 4000 ms on our test system, it is an impressive accomplishment of the Microsoft team.

What the..?! Wake up, Mozilla! All this waiting, just to see it coming up in last place?! At this rate, Windows 9 will be out before FFv4 final. Somebody please get me a Valium...

This (IE9) is just useless. If you go few threads earlier, you'll see how IE9 is cheating in SunSpider benchmark. In real time, it would be merely beating Firefox 3.6. ;)
