New feature may actually help scammers, says security firm

Security experts are warning that Google's recently launched Instant Previews function may lull internet users into a false sense of security when browsing.

Instant Preview allows users to see what a page looks like before visiting it by hovering or clicking a magnifying glass icon next to the search result.

However, it could mislead people into thinking that a site is secure when it is not, because the service is not updated as frequently as they might assume, according to security vendor Websense.

"We don't think this feature would help users much in making an informed decision on whether a link is malicious or not," said the firm in a blog post.

"We reported some black hat search engine optimised web sites from searches relating to Prince William's engagement yesterday. Using Google's Instant Preview on the malicious search results may lead users into believing that the links are safe when in fact they are not."

For example, the preview pane may display a legitimate page but actually lead to a fake Firefox update page, the vendor warned.

Blackhat SEO techniques are among the most popular for online scammers, who jump on the back of popular trending topics to promote malicious links via search engines.
