Search firm to ship own-brand netbook device, according to reports

The first mobile devices based on Google's Chrome OS are coming later this month, according to sources, with Google set to offer its own-brand model in a replay of its Nexus One smartphone launch.

Chrome OS is a lightweight platform aimed at mobile devices and based around the firm's Chrome browser. It will have few built-in applications, and is instead being focused on access to web-based services.

According to various online reports, the first netbook-style devices with Chrome OS will appear later in November, among them a device that will be sold direct by Google online like its short-lived Nexus One smartphone earlier this year.

However, Google declined to confirm or deny the reports. When contacted by V3.co.uk, a spokesperson for the company said that Google had nothing to share with the public at this time.

Chrome OS devices are expected to be based on ARM processors and ship with flash-based storage for greater responsiveness and to keep the weight down.

Google has previously announced several partners that are said to be working on Chrome OS devices, including Acer, Asus, HP, Lenovo, Toshiba and Dell.
