Survey finds average price of regular unleaded gasoline rose to $2.87 per gallon over last two weeks, even higher prices seen ahead of summer driving season.

(CNN) -- Gas prices rose more than eight cents in the past two weeks to a national average of $2.87 per gallon of self-serve regular -- and are expected to further rise -- according to a national survey released on Sunday.

That marks a rise of 69 cents at the pump since late January, Trilby Lundberg, publisher of "Lundberg Survey," said. The "Lundberg Survey" tallies gas prices every two to three weeks at about 5,000 gas stations.

The latest survey was conducted Friday.

The current price is about four cents lower than a year ago, Lundberg said, and it is about 15 cents less than the all-time peak in August.

Lundberg attributed the slight rise in gas prices to the current prices of refinery repairs, which are "keeping the market tight," she said.

Several refineries have had recent problems. Valero Energy Corp. shut its refinery in McKee, Texas, after a fire on Feb. 16, and company officials did not expect full resumption until late in the year. And earlier this month, the western hemisphere's second-largest refinery -- the Hovensa Refinery on the island of St. Croix, the Virgin Islands -- shut for 10 days of maintenance, Lundberg had told CNN earlier.

Lundberg said gas prices are expected to peak and then fall over the next few days, as refining operations return to normal, and as the influx of gasoline imports continue to bolster the gasoline supply in the United States.

Most Americans feel gas price pain: poll

Some areas of the country are already experiencing a decline in gas prices, Lundberg said.

"Certain wholesale gas prices plunging in some parts of the country," she said. By early May, a decline of five or 10 cents could be possible nationwide.

However, she warned that any new scare in the crude oil industry, which is skittish about Nigeria's political situation and Iran, could send gas prices back up.

Gas prices affect the incomes of such companies as BP, Exxon Mobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips.

Drivers in Minneapolis, paid the least at $2.65 per gallon of self-serve regular, according to the survey, and drivers in San Francisco paid the most at $3.37.

Here are some other prices:

Jackson, Miss.: $2.69

Atlanta: $2.76

Denver: $2.77

Boston: $2.78

Dallas: $2.79

Las Vegas: $3.02

Chicago: $3.02

Seattle: $3.13

Los Angeles: $3.28

Washington, D.C.: $2.96

Which is why we need to further examine alternative energy sources. I'm not talking about the latest bogus hype about biofuels and nuke-yu-lar energy, there are other sources that are more effective than those. Geothermal and Ocean power need to be talked about more in the mainstream media as well as Solar & Wind energies.

Those prices are nothing. :) $3.00 is appx £1.50.

In the UK: Average price ~£0.92/ litre which works out at about £3.50/ US Galllon. Which is more than double. There are many places that charge more than this; thus making this article worthless :P . A solution to the America's "pain" with fuel costs is to by smaller vehicles!

I do agree with Chicano, the need for alternative fuels. Biomass is a viable alternative to burning gas and coal for Electricity (and much greener). Nuclear is fine too. As for electric vehicles, this isn't gonna happen aslong as there is an amount of oil around.... due to the power of the oil companies ;)

Oil will be around for sometime...

And with these rates they will try their best to suppress other fuel options... untill all the oil on earth is finished...

Nuclear? and were would the end product be stored? I mean, who wants have weapons grade plutonium buried in their backyard? Unless a PERFECT storage/disposal solution can be reached (which ain't gonna happen) theres no way I would agree with nuclear. As for the Americans...they need the big cars, its just more manly and shows off your prowess....besides, theres no way they can fit in a compact car, there just too big from all that damn fast food (and other factors).

Q Can Fix IT

the us government is taking barrels of gasoline for about $40 usd at gunpoint from the iraqis this is why we are there, we are not trying to win a war, if they wanted to win a war and end it they would have sent ten times as many troops

each barrel has 42 gallons of crude oil. so at 3 dollars a gallon they are making about a 200% profit this is a rough estimate.

The last head of of one of these major oil companies retired with a $400,000,000 package. thats just retirement money kinda makes your 401k look like chump change doesn't it?, imagine how much he was making before he retired, thats just one guy. they are price gouging, they run the price up and blame it on world events, last year the price in the us went higher than ever before, and even BUSH of all people said we need to look for other sources of fuel, more hybrids were sold last year than since hybrids came into existence, even the greedy NYC taxi limousine commission, (in charge of one of the largest fleet of vehicles in the world) created a new rule that allowed yellow cabs from any hybrid car manufacturer, toyotas, hondas etc, people were finally waking up, when those numbers rolled in, all of a sudden, with no reason, the price of gas dropped, everyone stopped complaining, and hybrid sales have almost halted, then the gas price slowly went back up, creeping all the way and no one noticed that is it pretty much right back to that high number, with no real reason.

can you see what happened? they realized they pushed too far too fast, so they toned it down, let everyone stop whining, and crept it right back up, I knew that is exactly what was going to happen, when the price imploded and they caved my exact words to a few people in my circle was "watch, within 6 months the price is going to be right back to where it just was and no one will notice cause they'll take it up much slower seeing how far they can go one cent at a time" this is exactly what has happened. they are not paying more for this fuel, so why do we have to? it has been proven that existing combustion engines can run on other fuels with minimal modification. for example, any regular gasoline engine can run on hydrogen gas hydrogen fuel cells are all hype, its a way they can make money selling you water vapor the same stuff you see when you boil water to make tea or soup. if a car any car even an old American muscle car gas guzzler that gets 5 miles per gallon with normal gas were run on hydrogen, the only exhaust would be water vapor, this is a problem with some of the metals in the vehicle, namely the exhaust system, would need to be stainless steel so it wouldn't rust but it has been done.

any diesel engine can be run on vegetable oil, this same oil can be straight from the supermarket, or can be "cooked" into gasoline, fossil fuels are obsolete, but the engines they run are not, we have existing sources of oil that can be produced domestically, any oil will do. coconut, corn, peanut, even hemp, any oil.

water separates with as little as 1.24 volts of electricity, the trick is to produce the most hydrogen gas with the least amount of effort, this can be done effectively by oscillating the current, you can find information about this with google. cars can go a great distance with as little as one gallon of water which becomes a lot of hydrogen gas, remember gas has more volume than liquid. we have the technology, it doesn't need to be developed, or more research, we just need to use; it car manufacturers just need to start producing their cars water ready.

perhaps if they get enough letters from disappointed and unsatisfied customers this will happen.

PS does anyone else find it ironic, to see a huge gas guzzler like a hummer, or some other retardedly huge suv with a yellow support the troops magnet on the back? its like snorting coke while wearing a shirt that says just say no.

Off Topic: Theres that too, people are being mislead into what 'Supporting The Troops' really means, people think that by allowing more money they are supporting them, and if you cut funding then you are undermining them. How is it support if you send more money for them to STAY longer and possibly get killed, besides, if funding is cut it will not have a very negative effect on the troops.

On Topic: One word: Corporations. I strongly believe that many (if not most) of the problems we have today can be solved, but with every new idea the corporations get their hands on it first and ask....How will this generate income? How can we profit from it? If theres no way they can make money from it it simply never makes it the public and we are lead to believe that theres no solution. More irony......the first Diesel engine was designed to run on Peanut Oil.
