Apple iOS 4.1 Jailbreak Tool Expected Sunday

A member of the Chronic Dev Team has tweeted that the heavily anticipated greenpois0n Apple iOS 4.1 jailbreaking solution will be released on Sunday: 10/10/10 at 10:10:10 a.m.

Joshua Hill, also known as "p0sixninja", tweeted Thursday that "Things have progressed to the point where we don't expect anymore roadblocks. ETA for greenpois0n is 10/10/10 at 10:10:10AM." (Presumably that's GMT, along with 6:10:10 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time and 3:10:10 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time.)

Some have celebrated that jailbreaking iOS 4.1 will mean opening up not just iPhones and iPads but even the Apple TV, which also uses that operating system.

Some have warned about fake greenpois0n tools that have been circulating.

While Apple discourages jailbreaking, which enables users to run unapproved apps on Apple devices and run those devices on networks other than AT&T's, the practice was declared legal under U.S. copyright law over the summer despite the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

Apple iOS 4.1, released in September, boasts improved performance, access to Game Center, FaceTime calling and more.

Oct. 10, because of its unusual 10.10.10 date, could be an active day on the technology scene. Ubuntu 10.10 is expected out that day, for instance.

Jailbreak for iPhone, iPod and iPad released, by GeoHot

As the cat and mouse game between Apple and the jailbreaking community continues, another exploit has been discovered that will jailbreak the iPhone 4, iPod touch 4 and iPad. The exploit was found within the A4 chip bootrom, similar to that of the iPhone 3GS (old bootrom) exploit.

The exploit was discovered by p0sixninja, who originally planned to make the jailbreak available tomorrow, on 10/10/10 at 10:10 AM. The exploit will only work on the iPhone 4, iPod touch 4 and iPad, as they all use the A4 chip, but the team mentions that there will be future releases.

However, once the Greenpois0n team announced their ETA for their release, GeoHot suddenly came out of retirement and announced he will release a jailbreak on 10/11/10. After GeoHot made this announcement, he quickly compiled a jailbreak, using p0sixninja's exploit, and released it ahead of Greenpois0n, which is still slated for tomorrow, at the time of writing.

Limera1n works on the iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4, iPad on iOS 4.0, 4.1 and beyond.

GeoHot, aka George Hotz, is famous for his widely used BlackRa1n, which could jailbreak any Apple device at the time. Hotz was also the first hacker to successfully unlock the first iPhone, allowing it to work on any GSM carrier in the world.

the limera1n exploit wiped Cydia from my ipod touch (32g - 4.1 firmware, MC008BT)

It also did not start up with the 'limera1n' icon, after patching.

Anyone have any idea how to sort this?

(and no, rebooting doesn't put Cydia back, as it states on the limera1n site, either!)

limera1n does, however, work perfectly fine on my 32g ipad ;)

reboots with the limera1n icon, then click limera1n, choose install cydia - switch the ipad off, then back on again - viola...

...edited, to remove spelling mistakes/add ipod model...
