nsane.forums Posted September 17, 2010 Share Posted September 17, 2010 Colt and Infinera complete 100GbE trials between London and Frankfurt Faster wide area network links have moved a step closer to implementation with the successful conclusion of 100Gbit Ethernet (100GbE) trials by communications firm Colt using equipment supplied by Infinera. The trial made use of prototype 100GbE physical interfaces and operated over an 861Km link between London and Frankfurt. The trial marks an important step forward in the development of 100 Gigabit technologies to support ever-increasing bandwidth demand worldwide, according to the two firms. "It is important that we support the development of next-generation optical transport technologies that will allow us to meet customer demand for very high speed Ethernet services," said Colt chief technology officer Luke Broome. The 802.3ba Ethernet standard covering 100GbE and 40GbE was finally ratified in June by the IEEE, but represents a significant step up in network transmission speeds from the current generation of 10GbE equipment. Infinera said that the prototype interfaces used in the trial are fully compliant with the 802.3ba standard, while testing and verification of transmissions were performed with FTB-85 100 equipment supplied by network test vendor Exfo. Brocade disclosed earlier this week that it is taking pre-orders for its 100Gb Ethernet MLXE router, a carrier-grade product designed to scale up to deliver multi-terabit performance.
