Zeus_Hunt
component is based the very security of the operating system and Windows vista is no exception to this rule. With the release of Windows Vista, Microsoft has introduced three technologies designed to bulletproof the kernel. Driver signing, code integrity and PatchGuard are the pillars of the 64-bit editions of Windows Vista's kernel.“Kernel Patch Protection allows us to provide increased reliability, consistent performance, and additional levels of security for 64-bit Windows by preventing unauthorized software from modifying or patching the Windows kernel using unsupported methods while it’s running. Kernel Patch Protection works by providing extensibility that allows potential extensions to be planned for, reviewed and tested thoroughly during product development. Instead of allowing multiple parties to directly modify kernel instructions and data structures in undocumented and unsupported ways, providing supported mechanisms and APIs will strengthen the security, performance and reliability of Windows Vista,” revealed Microsoft’s Stephen Toulouse, senior program manager for the Trustworthy Computing Group.Symantec has long contested the legitimacy and validity of the Kernel Patch Protection, but Microsoft failed to budge from its position. Via driver signing, Microsoft controls all the drivers loaded into the kernel. And code integrity safeguards the core operating system and ensures that it has not been tampered with in any way.“Symantec researchers investigated the feasibility of disabling all three key kernel integrity technologies: driver signing, Code Integrity, and PatchGuard. Results have shown that all three technologies can be permanently disabled and removed from Windows Vista after approximately one man-week of effort. A potential victim need make only one mistake to become infected by a threat that does the same. The result: All new security technologies are stripped from Windows Vista in their entirety,” concluded Symantec. View: Original Article

I use Vista at Home :)
voodoohippie
Oh yea we should really trust the makers of an antivirus program in which the hackers can make a virus that becomes part of the program itself. Norton Anti Virus is so damn useless its a joke. I'd rather use a FREE program like Avast or AVG before I stick that POS into my computer and allowing it to hog up resources. As far as Vista? Its a damn joke too. XP is fine and there is nothing wrong with XP. It works and with 3rd party software runs better than Vista for now. Vista is a resource hog and a big money maper for the big companies forcing you to buy this and that.As far as HD well since Blue Ray was cracked you can now use XP to view HD. Boy I bet that made M$ pissed. If its not BROKE than don't fix it. If ya don't like Windows just use Linux instead. In fact Memphis works nicely as well and you can use a Windows emulator to run most Windows programs. In fact if you run the Linux Kernal first your computer is better protected than if you were to just run Windows.I sometimes wish I'd bought a Mac and ran a duel boot or better off ran Linux with a doul boot. Only thing is because I am legally Blind I need my Zoomtext. If someone can tell me a good screen magnifier with speech for Linux I'd prob just run Linux and forget running Windows for the most part. Heck even Linux has DvD copy programs now and good Mp3 players and ripper software. I just need a good net to phone prog for Linux and a good iPod copy prog for Linux. Heck even Office is Free in Linux.Oh and another thing for you people who love to go into dating chatrooms. With Linux ya can't get booted. I was at my friends house and the same jealous guys who like to keep the women to themselves could not boot me off Yahoo when I was running Linux with a sighted guide to help me get through it. Zeus_Hunt
Symantec has bombarded Windows Vista with no less than 2,000 instances of malicious code in order to determine the operating system's immunity to legacy and current threats. The Cupertino-based security company revealed that an overwhelming 58% of the binaries used in the test performed a successful execution. “The term Successful Execution simply means the binary was mapped into memory by the Windows loader and began executing instructions at the derived entry point. It does not, however, indicate the malicious code successfully compromised the system's integrity,” revealed Orlando Padilla of the Symantec Advanced Threat Research. The fact of the matter is that, if the Symantec proved anything, it is that Windows vista is quasi immaculate when confronted with legacy and current threats. Out of 197 Backdoors, only 6 (3%) managed to survive a reboot. And the same is valid for 118 Keyloggers where only 5 (4%) passed the reboot test, 17 Rootkits 0 (0%), 113 Mass mailers 4 (4%), 210 Trojan horses 4 (2%), 260 Spyware 4 (2%), 118 examples of Adware 2 (2%) and 728 items of Unsorted binaries 34 (5%).I guess I would be happy with these numbers.. considering that there is no antivirus installed on the test system...
