TAIWANESE SMARTPHONE MAKER HTC will roll out Android 2.2 updates to Desire handsets starting this weekend.

Google released the update to its Android operating system, codenamed Froyo, last month and so far a number of handsets have already adopted it.

Starting this weekend the OS update will appear on the HTC Desire, along with a number of other additions to the handset.

"The Android 2.2 (FroYo) update for HTC Desire will start rolling out across Europe this weekend," said the firm in a statement. "As well as including the complete set of Android 2.2 features, the update will contain a few special additions of our own through the latest iteration of HTC Sense."

Updates to the handset include 720p video capture, an application sharing widget and what the firm called enhancements to its Caller ID system. The keyboard has also had a touch up and has improved multi-language support, while new sync features will let users copy across their Itunes music collection.

The update will be sent over the air, and should appear when the phone checks for a software update. This, though, is likely to be a sizable lump, and HTC suggested that users should wait until they are in a Wifi area before taking it on.

Unlocked handsets will get it first, operator-hijacked models will come later, after 'tests', the firm explained, and those updates could appear in several weeks
