Financial show legal fees dwarfing returns

Financial results published by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) show that the pressure group is spending millions in legal fees to recover paltry amounts of damages.

According to 2008 financial data [PDF] obtained by p2pnet blog the group spent over $16m in legal and investigative fees and took in $391,000 in legal settlements. In 2007 costs of litigation were $24.5m and recovered just over $500,000 and in 2006 at $22.6m outlay netted ad return of $445,000.

The financial statements show the senior staff at the RIAA enjoy lavish salaries, with the chief executive taking in over $2m in salary and other compensation. Of the top staff the majority make over $200,000 a year.

The data sheds light on the general move by the RIAA away from individual prosecutions to targeting ISPs and governments. This has led to a number of anti-piracy laws in France and the UK and the RIAA's influence on the forthcoming ACTA treaty has been considerable.
