Domain gets the go-ahead after six-year battle

A dedicated internet domain for adult web sites has finally been approved after a six-year battle.

ICM Registry, the operator behind .xxx registration, announced today that the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) has approved the domain.

The news follows an independent review which declared that the Icann board's previous decision to deny .xxx was wrong.

ICM expects to go live with .xxx domains at the start of 2011, once Icann has completed due diligence on ICM's technical and financial qualifications, and finalised its contract to run the domain.

Icann initially approved ICM's application for the .xxx domain in 2005, but reversed its decision in March 2007.

An independent review panel called to investigate the u-turn found that Icann had been under pressure from the US government to deny the application.

The panel concluded that Icann's change of heart was a violation of its own bylaws and international law, but it did not have the power to compel the corporation to grant the registration.

The creation of the .xxx domain has met with opposition from church groups, which argue that it would create a "worldwide red-light district for the internet".

ICM, on the other hand, believes that the new domain provides "effective labelling of content" and "will allow for simple and effective filtering" of porn sites, making it easier for parents and businesses to block them.

However, the domain is only voluntary, meaning that porn sites can continue to use alternatives such as .com if they wish to do so.

"It's been a long time coming, but I'm excited about the fact that .xxx will soon become a reality. This is great news," said ICM chairman Stuart Lawley.

ICM already has 110,000 pre-reservations and expects this to increase following its application approval.

And some people are actually against it. This benefits in many ways but some are opposing it. -_-

The people opposing this are crazy, if you ask me.

Just because instead of 'nameofpronsite.com' (nameofpronsite might have xxx in it) you would now type 'nameofpronsite.xxx' (nameofpronsite has no xxx in it) there would be a 'red light district on the internet? Wake up lol, there already is and everybody knows it.

There's only good that can come of this (more effective filtering, bla bla).

I doubt anyone who registers with this domain won't get an alternative .com or whatever name. Knowing that they'll be easily blocked using a .xxx domain. Just my thought.

boooooo

the reasons.

first clearly someone in the icann tok a bribe.

second adult sites are not going to move there just to be taxes by this greedy bast!@#$

third oh he giong to give $10 for each company that gets on to the children protection crap

fourth oh what about adult ads? how many times you went suring for a crack or file or something and there was covered up ads and showing stuff ads.

fifth what is consider porn? whos standards do we use?

sixth how the f!@# is this giong to work now that their are none abc characters for address?

seventh what about p2p and newsgroup files?

eighth this is all about grabbing cetain names for possible future money. non adult groups will grab names to make sure adult groups dont get them. like sex.xxx, whitehouse.xxx etc.

ninth the end this will not protect any child but take are adult rights away. nothing more then a money grab.

tenth what next? a .gamble for the gambling sites?

this was had ads to plenty of fish. that make this an adult site. btw if you own (opps lease a name for 2 years) like name.com they do not get the same name in name.xxx. first come first serve rules. most are not going too.

8. That's not how it works at all, you can't just buy a domain name for possible future money unless it isn't an already registered trademark, even if you buy a domain name resembling an already established company name or legal trademark they can get it from you with an easy court order. Know why? Read the agreement you agree to when buying a domain. Secondly when a new TLD is made available it does not just go on the open market for the general public to buy all the good names with first come first serve, NO. There are separated periods of time that different people are allowed to buy, first preference is given for the legal trademark owners who have eligible registered trademarks so if sex.com is your legal trademark then you will be given preference and a significant grace period to purchase sex.xxx before it goes on the open market.

9. How is a new TLD taking away the rights of adults? It's not mandatory by law that all porn sites must use .xxx, you just have the option of using a more suitable TLD. Did you complain when they invented .jp or .de or .co or .mobi? Or is it because those TLD's have been around so long you think those are ok but new ones are not? I don't see how this is a money grab, they are running out of .com domains just like IPv4 addresses, you might think IPv6 is a money grab too when you hear the costs of that upgrade. ISP's all over the world will have to spend millions on IPv6 upgrades, a network switch costs more than a car and sometimes a house.

Here is some information from when .co was introduced, it will give you an idea of how domain grabbing works.

Global Sunrise.

Landrush.

General Availability.

.xxx is nothing more than a more appropriate domain name to match the content of the site that's all. Same way how .gov immediately tells you it's a government site and .org is for non profit organisation.

Just some extra stuff, if you buy a .us domain name and you are not a legal citizen of USA, you could easily lose that domain name if someone from USA contests it. :D

Also I believe there is talk about introducing a .kids TLD but no word on when or if it would actually be released. The strange thing is .xxx has been rejected before mainly because of opposition by the US gov't and not the general citizenry so that was a bit confusing for me.

no good will come from this period. its about making money and thats all. next governments will require it for adult sites. then will come the grab for the old .com names. they already had like 150,000 names grab in the xxx that been sign up waiting for the approvel. this will also give a false protection that parents will think is out there.

there is no reason for another domain. its bad enough that now there is no standard character format.

the 6 digital ips makes sense and should been the standard to begin with. there has been too many short cuts in the software and tech inds over the years. they wasnt running out of any room with the .com and others. everytime a new domain is made the companies try to get their name under the new domain also. and if they cant get it they will sue who ever has it. fiine example is peta.org. thats People Eating Tasty Animals. peta.com sued and stoled it.

in the end no go comes from this. just more domains brings in more money. on a side note becuase of the higher charges .xxx other ones will raise their price too.

what is consider adult porn? nude photos done in taste? nude without showing anything? anime? those little online flash games that are not for kiddies. ads links? under the bs usa cda one of the offical catholic sites was consider child porn because of the nude little angels. btw the kiddy crap sites are not going to go .xxx

its bad enough with the different character standards now.

i think the usa rejected it because of the money spam that was going to happen and the false sense of protection. i think it would also make the sting operations by the government harder on the kiddy crap.

i just dont see any good coming from it. but i can see a lot of bad coming down the road that will effect us all.
