Parallel processing standard approved by Khronos Group

An update to the OpenCL parallel processing standard has been ratified.

Standards organisation Khronos Group said that it was releasing the OpenCL 1.1 certification. The update will expand the functionality of the platform and improve interoperability with the OpenGL graphics format.

The 1.1 release expands on the initial 1.0 release of OpenCL in 2008. The format aims to function as a royalty-free platform which allows developers to better utilize parallel processing capabilities in CPU and GPU chips.

Among the companies now backing the project are hardware vendors like AMD, Intel and Nvidia as well as enterprise vendors such as IBM and game developers Blizzard and Electronic Arts.

The companies hope that the standard can help both hardware and software developers further parallel processing and general processing over GPU (GPGPU) methods.

"The clear commercial opportunity to unleash the power of heterogeneous parallel processing that drove multiple OpenCL 1.0 implementations has also fueled the ongoing industry cooperation to create OpenCL 1.1," said Khronos Group president and OpenCL working group chair Neil Trevett.

"The OpenCL 1.1 specification is being released 18 months after OpenCL 1.0 to enable programmers to take even more effective advantage of parallel computing resources while protecting their existing investment in OpenCL code."
