The Full ATI R600 Test

The following article, including lots of benchmarking of the R600 and GeForce 8800GTX, shows who did his homework better during the last months of the never-ending fight between ATI and nVidia. First of all we need to say that ATI’s R600 is not available to the public market yet (while we do have a certain certification sample), while nVidia’s G80 (better known as GeForce 8800) hit the stores already. This was a smart move from nVidia in the short run because they were able to catch the christmas market; however, in the long run the additional research invested in the R600 might not only catch up to the G80 performance, but take the GPU crown captured by nVidia’s current flagship.

The actual samples of R600 are in testing phase called “pre-production” but it seems that the boards have been producing some serious problems. We are not joking here; the situation is so bad that the R600 team decided to get another pack of early samples in order to retest them. We don’t know if it’s about the heat, the power or the GPUs themselves have gone mad but it’s bad enough to put a halt to the project for at least 3 weeks.

We don’t think that R600 will see the light before March. And this date is an optimistic one because, at the moment, the developing process of the R600 could be rolled back by 2 or 3 stages. Since we can’t do anything about it, we’ll wait for it to come out. But it would be better worth it!

Dont worry.. it will take some time before it comes out around mid Feb

By the way ...

Pricing of the new GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB is expected to be at least $299 but no one knows for sure. Anyway, the same source suggests that it won’t be higher priced than 7900 GTX and GeForce 7950 GT graphics boards so that means a maximum price of about $349. Coincidentally (or not) ATI/AMD is offering the Radeon X1950 XT in the same price range and I have a feeling that Nvidia’s board will outperform the older DirectX 9 card produced by Ati.
