In September last year, Paramount Pictures and Activision announced that Call of Duty will be stepping out of the video game space to the big screen for the first time. There's still a couple of years to go before the movie is supposed to hit theaters, but little by little, more about the project is being revealed.

Today during the Call of Duty in Culture Panel at Fanatics Fest in NYC, the upcoming Call of Duty movie's director and co-writer Peter Berg had something new to announce: the movie will officially be set in the Modern Warfare universe.

Since the gaming franchise's beginning in 2003, six mainline games have landed from the Modern Warfare subseries, which was also rebooted back in 2019. In a few months, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to land on PC and consoles too. The movie's other popular options would have been a World War II-set scenario or take the plot into the absurd world of Black Ops.

Unfortunately, there still aren't any details about what kind of plot fans can expect from the movie, though plenty of high-octane set pieces and explosions are expected. Series staple character John Price may appear in it too, possibly as the leader of his iconic multinational Task Force 141 special operations unit alongside John "Soap" MacTavish and Simon "Ghost" Riley.

Alongside Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights, Lone Survivor, Hancock), Taylor Sheridan (Hell or High Water, Yellowstone, Sicario) is also co-writing the movie script.

"We’re approaching this film with the same disciplined, uncompromising commitment to excellence that guided our work on Top Gun: Maverick, ensuring it meets the exceptionally high standards this franchise and its fans deserve," said David Ellison, chairman and CEO of Paramount, earlier this year about this project.

Paramount Pictures expects the Call of Duty movie to hit theaters on June 30, 2028. The movie doesn't have an official name attached to it just yet, though it may keep things simple and call itself Modern Warfare in the end.
