VMware player  disappeared after updating from a previous version...

yes, and so did most of the vmware tools ISOs (though the old versions were not deleted from the previous installation folder on program files (x86) )

This is one time when it really pays to read the release notes...

 

You'll see that this is an overdue switch to 64-bit binaries, and there are a few remnants that will be left over in the "Program Files (x86)" folder, requiring manual deletion to reclaim the disk space they take up. For best results, uninstall the previous version (keeping the settings) before installing the new version. Everything went smoothly for me. Don't worry about deleting the old tools in "windows.iso" as the updated tools are installed in their new 64-bit location.
