The end of an era: Sony officially kills floppy disks

Who uses 3.5-inch floppy disks anymore? No one. So it is a mainly symbolic announcement that Sony will no longer be producing the disks in Japan, officially putting the last death knell on the format.

Sony stopped making floppy disks in the US and other major markets long ago, and every other big corporation has pulled out of the now-archaic format.

According to Cnet, Sony still managed to sell 12 million floppy disks in its last fiscal year. That may be because it's the only real major player still in the market. But it has decided that it's time to move forward.

Sony is credited with bringing the 3.5-inch format to the market. It first introduced the medium to computers way back in 1981. Since then it has become completely obsolete with the advent of small memory cards, USB drives, and to a lesser extent the non-rewritable CD and DVD standard.

At the time, a handheld storage device that could store 1.44 MB was a big deal. Now, it has about the value of a half cent piece.

Sony will officially cease its floppy disk operations early next year. So long, floppy disks!

From time to time, I've been go from 8" to 3" disk, from low density, double density to high density...............

The tape remain in production but disk .........................

Remember the time past, there was several tech tried to replace floppy disk(3.5").

Did you use they before ?

They were 2.88M - 3.5" , ZIP drive, Imation Superdisk, Sony HiFD and some other opticals............

In the floppy age, we used the physical pigment of the disk to do the protection.

We will write irregular capacity of data to disk tracks.........

Memories...................

I don't think I can find a single blank floppy disk in the stores around here. Waste of a whole CD for just backing up the BIOS. :frusty:

R.I.P Floppy Disk. :pope:

I agree with the BIOS backup point, although my PC doesn't have a floppy drive.

A flash drive with FreeDOS (or something similar) can be used for bios flashing, and many new motherboards have built-in bios flashing program. So I've disconnected my floppy drive :P

I did have that floppy drive, but it was disconnected from the mobo about 3-4 years ago. I saw it just slowed my booting and always came in middle in my computer, very hard if you keep your mouse to single click. Also not to forget system hangs when it tried to read a floppy when nothing was inserted.
