*dcs18 Posted April 23, 2010 Share Posted April 23, 2010 As per RBI Circular {DPSS.CO.CHD.No. 1832/01.07.05/2009-10} dated 22nd February 2010, all Banks are supposed to prohibit alterations / corrections on the cheque leaf.Prohibition Of Alterations / Corrections On Cheques:-No changes / corrections can be made on the cheques (other than for date validation purposes, if required.) For any change in the 'Payee's name,' 'courtesy amount' (amount in figures) or 'legal amount' (amount in words etc.,) a fresh cheque leaf needs to be filled in by Customers. This would help Banks to identify and control fraudulent alterations / corrections.On the basis of the above guidelines, branches / clearing teams shall return cheques which have any alteration / corrections with respect to the following:-Payee's NameAmount in numbersAmount in wordsOnly The Date Can Be Altered / Corrected:-The above change to be incorporated within the Terms and Conditions in cheque books.Communication To Customers:-All Bank Customers to be informed via email as well as physical statement in the financial quarter April-May-June.Branches to display this notice at Teller counters / near the Cheque Deposit boxes.Bank branches shall commence returning the (altered / corrected) cheques with effect 1st July 2010.
