Twitter has taken advantage of its first user conference to announce a number of statistics about the service and reveal a handful of new features. Co-founders Biz Stone and Evan Williams took to the stage at the Chirp event in San Francisco to boast about the success of the micro-blogging service. Twitter now has 105 million registered users, and has logged 180 million unique visitors to Twitter.com. Some 300,000 people join every day, according to the company.

The microblogging firm also used the occasion to launch a new geo-location service called @anywhere. According to Stone, this makes it easier to keep on top of Twitter feeds, as you move around the internet. He revealed that a number of web sites are already keen on integration the service. 'Partners like Amazon are excited that customers can conveniently follow suggested Twitter accounts without ever leaving the shopping experience', he said.

As well as the aforementioned Amazon, Twitter will link into Bing search, he added, and the Citysearch travel site. In the UK, the Guardian Newspaper is using @anywhere to link its readers through to members of parliament as part of its election coverage. Stone also said in a blog post that the US Library of Congress has announced its intention to preserve all public tweets.

The Library already catalogues every book, pamphlet, printed article and piece of music registered in the US, and has suggested that public tweets are " important and worthy of preservation". "Since Twitter began, billions of tweets have been created. Today, 55 million tweets a day are sent to Twitter and that number is climbing sharply," said Stone. "Over the years, tweets have become part of significant global events around the world, from historic elections to devastating disasters."

Stone also announced a tie-up with Google which will let interested parties search a timeline of historical tweets. Google unveiled the service yesterday, saying that it will let users discover information about particular trends and reply to old tweets.

Another new service is Google Follow Finder that will let Twitter users discover and connect to anyone with similar interests. Currently only in Labs, Follow Finder is designed to make it easier to connect to tweets via a Google search page.
