Trend Micro pitches anti-virus tool at netbook users

Trend Micro has launched an anti-virus product specifically designed for small netbook computers. Titanium costs $39.95 (£25) and is pitched at consumers, but could also appeal to small businesses and remote workers as it offers robust security features and tools.

"Trend Micro found that, for everyday tasks such as email and surfing the web, netbook users need easy-to-install, easy-to-use powerful protection that automatically detects and removes the latest viruses and spyware. Trend has responded to that need with Titanium," said Anthony O'Mara, vice president for Europe at Trend Micro. Titanium works in the background and has a widget like interface that lets users adapt it to their own needs, the firm said. The fact that it runs silently means that users need not worry about whether they are protected or not, Trend added. Netbook manufacturer Asus has been quick to adopt Titanium, claiming that users often sacrifice security for speed and battery performance and put themselves at risk of infection.

"Low computing power also means that savvy netbook users may shut down critical security programs to boost speed," said John Swatton, marketing executive at Asus. "Titanium runs in the background providing comprehensive up-to-date protection against online threats without slowing down the system."
