G'day guys

Is it possible plug an SSD on a PCIE1 socket on the MB. I have this  MB  "GA-H81M-S2H" and currently have SATA 1TB installed. (pics attached)  I also have tow 2TB HDDs for storage. All is very good with Windows 10 64.

Thanks

John

1. Even if you get an adapter, you will not be able to boot from the m.2 .  Maybe there is a custom/modded BIOS for your motherboard, but I advise against such solution, unless it is tested and 100% working on the same motherboard model by someone else.

There are also workaround with loaders etc. , but I don't know about it. Something, that I haven't tested, I cannot recommend.

Note: A m.2 NVME SSD will probably work in your system with an adapter, it will be recognized by Windows 10/11, but it will not be recognized by BIOS and it will not be bootable.

2. Also, for 1-lane PCIE 2.0/2.1 the max speed is 500 MB/s, and for 1-lane PCIE 3.0/3.1 the max speed is 1 GB/s. But I doubt that the PCIE x1 ports on your motherboard are PCIE 3.0. They are probably 2.0, thus max 500 MB/s.

3. Thus it is better to buy a 2.5" SATA III SSD, and if you want a faster SSD, then buy one with DRAM cache, like Crucial MX500 or Samsung 870 EVO.

Greets,

Thanks for your answers guys. I don't think its worth it to try any of that, I may soon have to go W 11 and for that I'll be needing a new MB. I'm not desperate to install Windows 11, yet.

Thanks again

Kind regards

John

Well. this is possible in many ways.

Its not very simple so it require some skill and follow instructions to get it work.

Your MB support PCI-E 2.0 protocol on all its PCI-E slots,

Spoiler
Expansion Slots
  1. 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16
  2. 2 x PCI Express x1 slots
(The PCI Express slots conform to PCI Express 2.0 standard.)

means it will relatively limit the bandwidth data transmission speed at some level that will prevent nvme ssd drive to achieve its specification performance, but still can give you benefit in terms of performance.

You can also use a usb stick as boot that point to the ssd for OS.
