mood Posted May 17, 2021 Share Posted May 17, 2021 Microsoft Edge update fixes YouTube crashes, freezes Microsoft has fixed a nasty bug that was causing the Microsoft Edge browser to crash while watching YouTube videos or reading comments. Earlier this month, we reported that Microsoft Edge would become unresponsive when watching a full-screen video, and a circular loading graphic would appear. Eventually, the browser would stop responding and crash. Frozen YouTube video Users who experienced this issue noticed that one of their Microsoft Edge processes would begin to use gigabytes of memory, which eventually led it to crash. At the time, Microsoft acknowledged the issue in numerous Reddit discussions and asked users to try Microsoft Edge Canary to test a fix that they were working on. In BleepingComputer's tests, YouTube no longer froze when using Edge Canary, while other users reported that the bugs continued to happen. A Microsoft Edge engineer posted to a Reddit thread that their fix has helped many people, but not everyone, and that they are still working on a complete fix. "It is indeed video related, I can confirm that much. I can also say that if you are still experiencing this, we're still working on getting it sorted out. The Canary fix I mentioned helped a lot of people, but not everyone, and there's an upstream fix coming in soon. I'm not entirely sure when that will be, but I will follow up with you once I know. :)," said a Microsoft Edge engineer. On Friday, Microsoft released Microsoft Edge 90.0.818.62 to the Stable branch and fixed the YouTube problem. We can now browse YouTube, watch videos, and read comments without the processes getting too large and crashing in our tests. To update and install the latest Microsoft Edge browser, you can click on the Edge menu, select Help and Feedback, and then About Microsoft Edge. At this screen, Microsoft Edge will automatically check for the new update and install it.
