Johnny Cash download pushes service over milestone

Apple's iTunes store recently served up its 10 billionth song download.

The company said that the milestone download was made by Louie Sulcer of Woodstock, Georgia. Sulcer downloaded the Johnny Cash tune "Guess Things Happen That Way," to record the 10 billionth title to be transferred over the service.

The title may be the last one Sulcer has to purchase from iTunes for some time. For purchasing the 10 billionth song, Apple will be rewarding the man with a $10,000 gift card for the service.

The milestone is the latest to be reached by the hugely successful iTunes music service. Originally launched in 2003, the service took three years to hit the one billion download mark, and traffic only snowballed from there. In 2007 the service topped three billion downloads and one year later hit the five billion mark.

Since 2008, iTunes has been the largest music retailer on the market.

"We're grateful to all of our customers for helping us reach this amazing milestone," said Apple vice president of internet services Eddy Cue.

"We're proud that iTunes has become the number one music retailer in the world, and selling 10 billion songs is truly staggering."
