Leader's thoughts available to subscribers of People's Daily

Chinese president Hu Jintao opened a micro-blogging account today, although those hoping that the news will herald a more liberal approach to freedom of speech in the country are likely to be disappointed.

The blog will be available only to people who subscribe to China's state run People's Daily newspaper.

People's Daily Online launched the t.people.com.cn micro-blogging service at the beginning of February. It is the only such service run by a Chinese news site.

Twitter has been blocked in China since June last year, as were a host of social networking services, including Flickr, Bing, Hotmail and YouTube.

Those with access to Hu's blog say that he has not made any public comments so far, although he already has thousands of followers.

A report in The Times said that many of his followers had called for the unblocking of Twitter.
