Prototype service recognizes and translates text

Google is trying out a new system which aims to capture and translate text from image files.

The company said that the new feature would be part of the Google Goggles image-based search engine. The service attempts to recognize text within the image file and then runs the service through a translation service.

"On the simplest level, this prototype connects the phone's camera to an optical character recognition engine, recognizes the image as text and then translates that text into English with Google Translate," wrote Google scientist Hartmut Neven on a company blog post.

Google developers hope that the service appeals to mobile users who travel often and need to quickly translate posted or printed text.

Though the service is currently considered a prototype and is limited to German and English translation, the company eventually hopes to expand the program to all 52 languages in the Google Translate service.
