OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro launch w/ Hasselblad-tuned cameras, 120Hz displays, more

 

 

After weeks of teases and snippets, the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro have now officially been unveiled during a live-streamed launch event with some notable improvements over the 2020 cohort.

 

The long (read: very short) wait for a new OnePlus smartphone is now over with the launch of the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro, two fairly similar smartphones that, unlike the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro from last year, have more in common than just the chassis.

 

Starting with the OnePlus 9, this mainline series OnePlus smartphone has seen the most notable upgrades. It comes with a 6.55-inch FHD+ display that is now clocked at 120Hz. Unlike the OnePlus 8, the OnePlus 9 has a flat AMOLED display with an under-display optical fingerprint scanner included for biometric unlocks.

 

The OnePlus 9 Pro has a curved 6.7-inch QHD+ LTPO AMOLED display that is also clocked at 120Hz. LTPO stands for low-temperature polycrystalline oxide – or LTPO for short — allows the display refresh rate to dynamically alter based upon the current scenario. So for instance, a static image can be displayed at lower refresh rates as low as 1Hz to help conserve battery life.

 

Most of the other underlying internals on the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro are identical, with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset and 8/12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128/256GB UFS 3.1 storage configurations available.

 

 

Interestingly, battery sizes remain the same for both devices with a maximum capacity of 4,500mAh. For the first time on a mainline OnePlus smartphone, the OnePlus 9 includes Qi wireless charging at 15W speeds. While the OnePlus 9 Pro is capable of 50W Warp Wireless charging speeds. 65W wired Warp Charging is also included on both models via USB-C and can take the battery from 0 to 100% in under 30 minutes.

 

Of course, a huge pre-release hype generator has been the Hasselblad-tuned camera setups. This ongoing collaboration will result in codeveloped lens setups, but for now the partnership is limited to color tuning and a focus on color accuracy.

 

New hardware is still present, as the OnePlus 9 comes with a triple rear camera setup that consists of the 48-megapixel Sony IMX689 sensor, the new Sony IMX766 50-megapixel ultrawide-angle, and a 2-megapixel monochrome sensor. The OnePlus 9 Pro ups the ante with a 48-megapixel Sony IMX789 sensor, the same 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 ultrawide, plus an 8-megapixel 3.3x telephoto lens, and 2-megapixel monochrome sensor.

 

The OnePlus 9 is fairly capable but lacks OIS on the main sensor, instead relying on EIS for stabilization. Conversely, the OnePlus 9 Pro includes OIS and EIS on the main sensor. This new partnership with camera stalwarts Hasselblad adds a few camera software tweaks including a dedicated Hasselblad Pro mode and even a faux-Tilt Shift photography mode.

 

 

With the Hasselblad Pro Mode, you’re given greater controls over the shutter speed, ISO levels, histograms, and exposure length. You can also shoot 12-bit RAW on the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro, for even great dynamic range and highlight preservation. The stock OnePlus camera app now also includes Hasselblad sound effects and accents for the shutter button and various UI elements.

Other camera features include Nightscape 2.0, Super Macro, UltraShot HDR, Portrait mode, Cat/Dog face detection, Super Stable video, Nightscape Video, plus the ability to shoot video at 8K/30fps and 4K at up to 120fps.

 

 

Both handsets come with Android 11 with OxygenOS 11 pre-installed with some minor tweaks that include Turbo Boost 3.0. This memory optimization technique is capable of keeping more than 25% of your apps open in the background, meaning app loading should be even faster than before. The Fnatic Gaming mode has also been renamed following the ending of the partnership to “Pro Gaming Mode.” New internal cooling ensures that gaming sessions should be flawless on the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro.

 

The OnePlus 9 will be available in Winter Mist, Arctic Sky, and Astral Black in 8/128GB and 12/256GB configurations priced at $729/£629 and $829/£729 respectively. The OnePlus 9 Pro starts at $969/£829 for the 8/128GB configuration, while the 12/256GB option is priced at $1069/£929. Hmm I know I've had the experience of owning the OnePlus 1, OnePlus X, and currently the OnePlus 6t and they've all been best bang for buck.

But now with each iteration going higher and not necessarily offering the best... I feel for my next phone it'd probably go to a Samsung given the pricing... OnePlus 9 Pro looks great and glad to hear the camera quality has gone UP significantly compared to past generations, is good to hear. I mainly use my phone to do recording and therefore prefer great video quality (not so much picture quality, since I rarely take photos)

Though it'll be a long while before I actually consider buying a new phone, shall just see how the OnePlus 9t might look like, or if OnePlus goes back to actually being a flagship killer (at a low cost).

Definitely agree with you... I have been following OnePlus closely since their initial introduction to the market, and their objective of disrupting the trend of skyrocketing high end devices was promising. They could have been a brand that infiltrated many developing markets where spending power is less, but technological advancement is rapid.

 

Unfortunately in my region these phones were hard to come by, and still are, so to some extent I am disappointed with their lack of a complete global roll-out. Nevertheless, where there is a will, there is a way, and with each 2 year upgrade period, I examine the possibilities to get hold of one, importing or have a friend buy one, but since the last 2 years, their pricing moved out of the reaonability bracket, especially if you have to buy the phone cash and can't get is subsidized on a contract. I get the impression they have become reliant or hoping on the support on loyal fans of the brand that are not price-sensitive and live in countries where interest rates are between 0% and 1%, to pay whatever they charge, rather than gaining a wider user base through afforability. With pricing jumping over $700 for compromised entry level higher end devices... yeah they are not the brand they used to be. Having had Samsungs for 16 years, I took a chance to jump board and due to financial constraints bought a Xiaomi flagship - for something like €300 - and after 15 months cannot find one reason to complain, especially with the wonderful EU Rom support. Yes they are also getting a bit more expensive, but not as rapidly! It is a pity to be honest, as I would have gladly supported the ideology of OnePlus, also when Pixel devices have become redundant spec wise, and ludacrisly pricey.

I share your point of view. I am a fan of Pixel phones but this year the Pixel 5 do not complied with my expectations and I begin taking a close look to OnePlus phones.

 

Hoping to see this year the Pixel 6 specifications and see what happen.
