OVH data center burns down knocking major sites offline

In a major unprecedented incident, data centers of OVH located in Strasbourg, France have been destroyed by fire.

OVH is the largest hosting provider in Europe and the third-largest in the world. The cloud computing company provides VPS, dedicated servers, and other web services.

Customers are being advised by the company to enact their disaster recovery plans after the fire has rendered multiple data centers unserviceable, impacting websites around the world.

Fire destroys Strasbourg data centers

OVH, the world's third-largest and Europe's largest hosting provider has been impacted by a disaster.

Its French data centers, SBG1, SBG2, SBG3, and SBG4 located in Strasbourgh were shut down to contain the damage from a fire that started in SBG2.

A statement provided by OVH on their status page reads:

We are currently facing a major incident in our DataCenter of Strasbourg with a fire declared in the building SBG2.

Firefighters were immediately on the scene but could not control the fire in SBG2.

The whole site has been isolated, which impacts all our services on SBG1, SBG2, SBG3 and SBG4.

If your production is in Strasbourg, we recommend to activate your Disaster Recovery Plan.

All our teams are fully mobilized along with the firefighters.

We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.

In hours following the incident, BleepingComputer saw the data centers SBG2 and SBG3 disappearing altogether from OVH's list:

Major sites knocked offline, more expected

As a result of this incident major customers of OVH state their web services are inaccessible.

The list of impacted clients includes cyber threat intelligence company Bad Packets, provider of free chess server Lichess.org, videogame maker Rust, cryptocurrency exchange Deribit's blog and docs sites, telecom company AFR-IX, encryption utility VeraCrypt, news outlet eeNews Europe, the art building complex Centre Pompidou, and many others.

Deribit has clarified to BleepingComputer that the outage only impacted their docs and blog sites and that the exchange was never down.

For videogame maker Rust, the incident has led to a total data loss leaving no way for recovery.

"We've confirmed a total loss of the affected EU servers during the OVH data centre fire. We're now exploring replacing the affected servers. Data will be unable to be restored," the game developer tweeted.

Although according to the OVH founder and chairman Octave Klaba, the fire has been contained as of early hours of March 10th, 2021, services are expected to remain unavailable at least for today.

"Fire is over. Firefighters continue to cool the buildings with the water."

"We don’t have the access to the site. That is why SBG1, SBG3, SBG4 won’t be restarted today," said Klaba.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of any casualties arising from the fire so far.

Customers should immediately bring into effect their disaster recovery plans as OVH is working on restoring its services.

This is a developing story.

Update 10-Mar-2021 8:50 AM ET: Clarified that the OVH outage impacted only Deribit's blog and docs sites and not the exchange.

OVH data center fire likely caused by faulty UPS power supply

Today, OVH founder and chairman Octave Klaba has provided a plausible explanation for the fire that had burned down OVH data centers in Strasbourg, France.

OVH is the largest hosting provider in Europe and the third-largest in the world. The cloud computing company provides VPS, dedicated servers, and other web services.

The online properties impacted by the fire included free chess server Lichess.org, videogame maker Rust, cryptocurrency exchange Deribit's blog and docs sites, telecom company AFR-IX, encryption utility VeraCrypt, news outlet eeNews Europe, the art building complex Centre Pompidou, and many others.

OVH customers were being advised at the time to enact their disaster recovery plans after the fire had rendered multiple data centers unserviceable, impacting websites around the world.

UPS power backup likely behind the fire, says founder

In a video released today, OVH founder and chairman Octave Klaba started off with an apology and provided an update on the data center disaster investigation.

While the company may not yet have complete answers as to what exactly caused the fire bringing down its data centers, the founder touched upon an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) unit that had been serviced that morning.

In the video, Klaba explains that when the firefighters had arrived on the premises, the images taken with thermal cameras showed two UPS units burning, namely UPS7 and UPS8.

The sighting is relevant as UPS7 had been serviced by a maintenance person in the morning.

Klaba said that the UPS supplier had come in the same morning and changed many pieces within UPS7, and restarted the unit.

At the time, everything seemed fine and the power backup unit was working smoothly up until the point the fire started.

"Thanks to the 300 cameras that we have in Strasbourg, and all the videos that we have started to extract, we hope to have all the answers [on how the fire started]," the founder said, hoping to provide a clearer picture of the events in the next few days.

SBG2 data center was older generation

The company is working on cleaning up the premises and rebuilding the data center with their suppliers by adding additional resources.

OVH has procured 2,000 servers as of yesterday, with additional 1,000 units set to arrive in the next few days, according to Klaba.

The founder explained that SBG2, the data center where the fire had started, was an older generation center built in 2011 and that the company is working towards replacing older infrastructure with newer technology.

"When you see SBG3, that is totally a different generation of data center, it was not impacted at all as it is totally different construction; and [is built with newer technology that we are deploying elsewhere]," said Klaba.

The company aims to increase the capacity of its production factory so that they can deploy around 2,500 servers on a weekly basis, and over 10,000 servers next month in its newly built data center.

More updates with regards to the incident can be found on OVH status pages [12].

Ah, ah, ah .... cloud system ... arghhh !

Always keep your data also in your computer rather than only in a cloud (remember when Rapidshare was seized, thousend and thousend people lost their data, thinking these were in a safe place).

And always make a daily/weekly copy on seperated device (portable hard drive).

Those separated devices should also be kept at different places so that they should not be destroyed at the same time (like fire at home...).
