OnePlus 9R could be the third device that will be launched alongside the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro

A new leak speculates that the OnePlus 9E/OnePlus 9 Lite could actually be called the OnePlus 9R. Renowned leaker Evan Blass seems to have dug up the OnePlus 9R moniker from the device's firmware. It is expected to serve as a cheaper alternative for the vanilla OnePlus 9.

Rumours about another device accompanying the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro have been around for quite some time. Tentatively called the OnePlus 9E, the entry-level OnePlus device would be the first of its kind, as a third OnePlus-branded handset launched alongside two flagship smartphones. However, a new leak from Evan Blass tells us that it could be called the OnePlus 9R.

Blass found references to the device buried deep within some code, presumably from on-device firmware. This throws a spanner in the works of an earlier leak which prophesized that it would be called the OnePlus 9 Lite or OnePlus 9E. Regardless of its moniker, we know for certain that the OnePlus R will serve as a cheaper alternative for those who cannot afford the vanilla OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro.

Regardless of its name, we should treat information around the OnePlus 9R/ OnePlus 9E with a healthy dose of scepticism. We heard similar tales about the OnePlus 8 Lite last year. Although the rumoured OnePlus 8 Lite was a real device, it launched several months later as the OnePlus Nord. OnePlus isn't the type to launch three smartphones at a go. However, it could be trying new things out now that former-cofounder Pete Lau has parted ways.

OnePlus may have a particularly busy March. Well-known tipster Ishan Agarwal told 91Mobiles that OnePlus will reportedly unveil at least four devices in March, including a lower-cost 9R smartphone (you're looking at the 8T above) as well as the standard 9, the 9 Pro and the company's previously teased smartwatch. While Agarwal doesn't have new specs to share for either the 9R or the watch, it comes just days after Evan Blass found web evidence of the 9R name.

The 9R was previously rumored as a 9E or 9 Lite and might straddle the gap between OnePlus' usual flagships and budget devices like the Nord N series. It wouldn't bowl anyone over with its 6.5-inch 90Hz display, Snapdragon 690 chip or 64MP main camera, but it might offer more RAM and battery (8GB and 5,000mAh respectively) than the Nord N10's 6GB of memory and 4,300mAh battery pack. The 9 and 9 Pro are both expected to include smoother 120Hz displays, more powerful Snapdragon 888 chips and upgraded camera tech (if at lower resolutions), so you'd still have a clear incentive to spend extra if your budget allows.

The OnePlus watch, meanwhile, could be a circular Wear OS watch that shares some common ground with the Oppo Watch RX.

If the claims are accurate, you could expect OnePlus to start teasing the 9R, the watch and other offerings in the near future. It's safe to say this would be the largest OnePlus launch yet — it would have four new major products and a full range of phones covering most use cases. Whether or not fans will be happy is another story (a compromised 9R device doesn't exactly scream "Never Settle"), but they at least won't be hurting for choice.

OnePlus will reveal its first smartwatch on March 23rd

The OnePlus 9 launch event will include wristwear too.

As we'd expect from OnePlus at this point, the march to a new product release includes a steady drip-feed of information. That includes its first watch, which we will see on March 23rd at the same time its new OnePlus 9 series of phones launches. Late last year CEO Pete Lau said "Wishes do come true" while informing fans a watch was in the works, and after OnePlus cancelled its first effort in 2016, we'll be able to see if they have anything special and different to bring to your wrists.

Droid-Life points out that the reveal tweet links to a forum thread inviting wrong answers only about possible features for the new device. While we can figure it will have the usual suite of sleep and activity-tracking abilities, showing a little imagination could make you a winner of a free watch, so realistic projections can stay in the comments here while any wildly off-base "drawings, renders, descriptions, videos" should go in that thread.

You asked for it. You're getting it.

The OnePlus Watch gets an early reveal ahead of March 23rd announcement

Definitely looks like a watch

OnePlus’ long-awaited first smartwatch has made its first appearance ahead of the company’s upcoming March 23rd launch event, which is feeling increasingly irrelevant as almost every piece of news about its new product lineup trickles online in bits and pieces.

Revealed fully for the first time by Unbox Therapy, the creatively named OnePlus Watch doesn’t appear to break too much new ground when it comes to smartwatch design. Visible are two buttons on the right side of the watch (notably, there’s no scrolling crown-style wheel) on an otherwise normal-looking watch. Also of interest are what appears to be standard watch straps, instead of the proprietary bands that are popular among companies like Apple and Fitbit.

The image also gives a first look at the Watch’s new OS, which OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirmed in a forum post is not running Wear OS, but instead an RTOS-style operating system. Lau’s post also promises “seamless connectivity” to OnePlus phones, headphones, and TVs, and an “affordable price point.”

Smartphone leaker Ishan Agarwal has also revealed more specific details on the specs of the OnePlus Watch claiming that it will measure in at 46mm, feature IP68 water resistance, and feature a version of OnePlus’ Warp Charge system (promising a week of battery life off a 20-minute charge). It’ll also have 4GB of storage and the ability to see notifications, incoming calls, and automatically detect workouts.

Exclusive: OnePlus Watch Specifications

- 46mm
- IP68
- Warp Charge (A week of charge in 20 minutes)
- Sleep, Stress, Blood Saturation, Heart Rate Monitoring
- Check Notifications, Calls
- Control OnePlus TV
- 4GB Storage
- Auto Workout Detection

Agarwal also says that the watch will be able to track sleep, stress, blood oxygen saturation, and heart rate — which could correspond to the four colorful tracking bars seen on the watchface in Unbox Therapy’s image.
