Microsoft releases Edge 87 with shopping features and more

Today, Microsoft released Edge 87 to the stable channel. It's right on schedule, arriving six weeks after Edge 86 came out. Being a major update, there are a bunch of new features.

One thing that's new is that if you're using Internet Explorer, sites that are incompatible will automatically redirect you to Edge. Once in Edge, users will then find that they can use IE mode to run sites that are only compatible with Internet Explorer.

You'll also find that new shopping features are on by default now. Edge will find and give users coupons for things that they're shopping for, and help you to find better prices.

That's not all though, because there's a new Enterprise New Tab Page (NTP), which gives you work-related feed content. It's based on your organizations Office 365 content, and Microsoft Search for Business powered by Bing.

Here's everything that's new:

  • Automatic redirection for incompatible sites from Internet Explorer to Microsoft Edge. Starting with the Microsoft Edge 87 Stable update, public websites that show an incompatibility message on Internet Explorer will be automatically redirected to Microsoft Edge. To learn more and to configure this experience, see Redirecting incompatible sites.
  • Kiosk mode privacy features enabled. Starting with Microsoft Edge version 87, kiosk mode features that will help enterprises around the privacy of user data will be enabled. These features will enable experiences such as clear the user data on exit, delete downloaded files and to reset the configured start experience after a specified amount of idle time. Learn more about how to Configure Microsoft Edge kiosk mode
  • Shopping features enabled by default. Starting with Microsoft Edge version 87 enterprise users can also benefit from shopping in Edge. With Shopping features, Microsoft Edge helps users to find coupons and better prices while shopping online. Coupon experience is available with this update and price comparison will be released in upcoming updates for Microsoft Edge 87. This feature can be configured through EdgeShoppingAssistantEnabled policy. See our Blog and Learn More about Microsoft Shopping.
  • ClickOnce deployment enabled by default. ClickOnce is enabled by default in Microsoft Edge 87, which reduces the barriers for enterprises to deploy software and better align with Microsoft Edge Legacy browser behavior. Starting in Microsoft Edge 87, the ClickOnceEnabled policy's "Not configured" state will reflect the new default ClickOnce state of Enabled (as compared to the previous default state of Disabled).
  • The enterprise new tab page (NTP) integrates productivity with customizable, work-relevant feed content. The enterprise NTP blends the Office 365 productivity page we offer to users signed in with their work or school account with personalized, work-relevant company and industry feeds that are organized in a single page. Users will be able to recognize the familiar Office 365 content and Microsoft Search for Business powered by Bing. In addition, they can easily customize "My Feed" by choosing the most relevant content to them from the available content and modules for their organization. IT Administrators can control the News feed settings for their organization, including the selected industry for the Edge new tab page by going to Microsoft 365 admin center. Learn more
  • Privacy and Security:
    • Support TLS Token Binding for policy-configured sites. TLS Token binding helps prevent token theft attacks to ensure that cookies can't be reused from a device other than the device upon which they were initially set. The use of TLS token binding requires setting the AllowTokenBindingForUrls policy and requires that the sites listed support this feature.
  • Keyboard support for highlighter on PDF files. Users can use their keyboard keys to highlight any text on a PDF.
  • Printing:
    • Choose which side to flip on when printing on both sides. Users can choose to flip on the long side or the short side of a sheet when printing on both sides.
    • Choose print rasterization mode for the enterprise. Control how Microsoft Edge prints to a non-PostScript printer on Windows. Sometimes print jobs on non-PostScript printers need to be rasterized to print correctly. The print options are "Full" and "Fast".

As always, you can manually update your browser by going to Settings -> About Microsoft Edge. If you don't do that, your browser will be automatically updated in the background.

Microsoft details the new features added to Edge this month

Microsoft today posted its November iteration of the new “What’s new in Web Experiences” series of blogs, detailing a whole bunch of features making it to the browser this month. These include a number of shopping features geared towards the upcoming holiday season, PDF improvements, and more.

First up are the enhancements being made to improve shopping, building on the additions made last month. The first in the list is a new coupons feature on both desktop and mobile – currently limited to iOS – that automatically surfaces any available coupons on a retailer’s website. Clicking the blue shopping tag at the end of the address bar provides a list of available options for that retailer. The feature also helps compare prices automatically between multiple retailers, saving users the effort to look through multiple websites. These features can be turned off through the settings.

Another addition is the new ‘Deals’ feature on the new tab page. Users can hit the plus sign on the new tab and turn on the feature from the Top sites list to get “up-to-the-minute retailer discounts”. The new tab page also features voice search now. The price comparison and Deals features are currently restricted to users in the U.S.

There are also new features in Bing for some regions that make it easier to shop during the holidays. These include the updated Deals and new Shopping hubs for offers from brands organized by categories. There’s also a new Shop the Look feature that uses visual search technologies to curate listing for items based on users’ searches. The Shopping tab can also show comprehensive product details for select products, for which users can choose to track the price and add to their wish lists.

As for the browser itself, the new Web Capture feature is being made available this month. The feature lets users capture screenshots of webpages and annotate or draw on them, something that was a sought-after capability in legacy Edge. The firm will be adding the ability to capture screenshots of the entire webpage later in the month, which is currently being tested in the Canary and Dev channels. The browser is also adding support for text notes in PDFs to highlighted text. Lastly, there is a new tab page experience for Enterprise users, which will roll out with version 87 slated for release this week.

Other improvements making their way to Edge include a new copy-paste experience for pasting links, letting users paste website links as plain text to reduce clutter. The firm is also touting improvements made to Microsoft News via the Edge browser on the Surface Duo, with support for the dual displays built into the Launcher and News for an enhanced reading experience.
