Karlston
Microsoft will slow down update releases in December 2020 Microsoft announced this week that update processes will change in the month of December 2020 for its Windows operating system. December is a month in which development slows down in many tech companies due to many employees being away for the holidays. Microsoft is one of these companies, and that means that update releases and other processes will slow down in December 2020. The change does not affect security updates, as these will be released on the second Tuesday of December 2020 on the last Patch Day of the year. The change does affect so-called preview updates that Microsoft releases for its operating systems, as these won't be released in December 2020. If you check the November 10 Patch Day support pages right now, you are informed at the top that preview updates won't be released. See KB4586781 as an example. IMPORTANT Because of minimal operations during the holidays and the upcoming Western new year, there won’t be any preview releases for the month of December 2020. Monthly servicing will resume with the January 2021 security releases. The next preview updates will be released in January 2021 again. There is a similar situation for driver releases. Microsoft partners have until December 3, 2020 to submit new drivers in order for them to be rolled out in December 2020. The following explains the entire process: Drivers submitted on December 3 or before "should complete Microsoft Approval" and "start the release monitoring phase by December 17". Drivers submitted after December 3 may get Microsoft Approval but it won't get released until January 4. Drivers released late in December, e.g. on December 17, won't likely get Microsoft Approval in December 2020. The approval is granted in January, and the release will start around mid January in that case. Drivers that are released already but get paused may not be resumed until January if they are paused in mid- to late December 2020. Administrators who only install the security patches in a given month won't notice any changes to the update schedule as these are still provided by Microsoft. Those who install the preview updates on the other hand, will not be able to do so in December 2020 as none will get released. BimBamSmash
I honestly don't mind if this "slow down" was extended well beyond December.
steven36
Every year updates slow down DEC on Ubuntu Linux its more noticeable because you get updates several times a week this is not noticeable if you have your system setup for auto updates and live Kernel patching but i always monitor my updates and have it set on manual updates and update when i have time and just reboot for Kernel updates they don't happen a lot . It only takes a few minutes to do updates on Linux . Since most updates on Windows are released in rollups once are two times a month you most likely won't never notice it . In Nov Microsoft released a 112 security hole fixes in there products other OS such as Android and Redhat had right many security hole fixes but Microsoft is the Swiss cheese of security holes. Updates always pick back up after the holidays.
tarekma7
Microsoft has announced that they will not be releasing cumulative updates previews in December 2020 due to limited staff and operations during the upcoming holidays. When Microsoft releases new update Windows and Windows server updates, it uses a fixed schedule, or cadence, that allows businesses and consumers to prepare and test new releases as they come out. Microsoft associates each week of a month with a letter ranging from 'A' to 'D'; the 'A' week being the first week of the month and the 'D' week being the last. Every month, Microsoft releases Windows updates as a 'B' release known as Patch Tuesday, which is classified as 'Important' and automatically installed by Windows. Microsoft also releases cumulative update previews on the 'C' and 'D' weeks that contain fixes being released in the next Patch Tuesday. These preview updates give the enterprise time to test new fixes in their environment before they become mandatory. Windows preview updates on hold in December 2020 Over the weekend, Microsoft has updated the support bulletins for recently released cumulative updates with a message stating that they will not be releasing preview updates in December 2020 due to the holidays. "IMPORTANT Because of minimal operations during the holidays and the upcoming Western new year, there won’t be any preview releases for the month of December 2020. Monthly servicing will resume with the January 2021 security releases," Microsoft added to recent cumulative update bulletins. The normal Patch Tuesday 'B' release will be scheduled as usual in December 2020 and January 2021, but Microsoft will not be offering a preview release of the January 2020 Patch Tuesday. This change may be concerning for businesses as they will not test new fixes before they come out in January 2021. However, due to the holiday, Microsoft will likely focus on security vulnerability updates and only fixes for critical bugs in December. Standard Windows servicing will resume in January 2021.
