Oxford coronavirus vaccine works 'perfectly' and builds 'strong immunity to virus, researchers find - providing hope to millions and quelling fears that it might only lessen the severity of infections

  • Oxford University's vaccine delivers the instructions for the Covid protein
  • This primes the person's immune system to recognise the virus and fight it off
  • While the world waits for the results of trials on whether the Oxford vaccine works, the findings are the next step forward

The Covid-19 vaccine developed at Oxford University works perfectly and builds strong immunity to the virus, a study shows.

Great hopes rest on the vaccine, which is a global front-runner and has been shown to safely trigger an immune response in volunteers given it in early trials. But, unlike traditional vaccines which use a weakened virus, or small amounts of it, the innovative Oxford jab causes the body to make part of the virus itself.

Now researchers led by the University of Bristol have found this daring technology works for the coronavirus, just as it has for similar viruses in the past.

A study using cells in the laboratory found the vaccine effectively delivers the instructions for the Covid protein, which cells copy thousands of times to produce it in large amounts. This means a person's immune system is then primed to recognise the disease and fight it off without them falling ill.

Dr David Matthews, from Bristol's School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM), who led the research, said: 'Until now, the technology hasn't been able to provide answers with such clarity, but we now know the vaccine is doing everything we expected and that is only good news in our fight against the illness.'

While the world waits for the results of trials on whether the Oxford vaccine actually works, the new findings are the next step forward.

It comes as Donald Trump last night claimed a coronavirus vaccine, considered key to finally ending the pandemic, is 'ready'. In the final election debate against Joe Biden last night, the current US President said the jab is going to be announced 'within weeks' and will be delivered by the military.

The UK today announced another 21,242 positive tests and 189 deaths

Scientists found instructions from the vaccine were copied accurately by cells, making the protein correctly.

Sarah Gilbert, who leads the Oxford University vaccine trial, said: 'The study confirms that large amounts of the coronavirus spike protein are produced with great accuracy, and this goes a long way to explaining the success of the vaccine in inducing a strong immune response.'

The results were released as the Chief Scientific Adviser warned a widespread roll-out of a vaccine for Covid-19 is unlikely to take place before next year, even if a 'few doses' are available before Christmas.

Speaking at the Downing Street press conference, Sir Patrick Vallance said: 'Things are progressing well, there are vaccines that produce an immune response, they're in phase three clinical trials, we should be seeing some data read-outs over the course of this year, but I remain of the view that the possibility of wider-spread use of vaccines isn't going to be until spring or so next year, by the time we get enough doses and enough understanding of the outputs to use them.'

Sir Patrick said the aim would be for a vaccine to allow the 'release' of measures such as social distancing and mask-wearing.

He said: 'That's got to be an aim that we would all wish for, and that's why so many companies around the world are working on vaccines and why there has been such remarkable progress.'

The UK's chief scientific adviser also told peers this week that he thought Covid-19 would probably never disappear and that a vaccine won't stop it completely.

Sir Patrick also said he thought the virus will one day become like flu and cause outbreaks each year, and added that ministers and experts should stop 'over-promising' and be realistic about the prospects of a vaccine.

It is not likely that a jab will be completed before spring, Sir Patrick said, echoing his earlier warnings and those of his colleague Chris Whitty that the Covid-19 fight will be a long one.

In the same meeting, Sir Patrick said he still believes a flu pandemic is the biggest threat to the UK and that his office has set up a second system in case there is another crisis before the coronavirus epidemic comes to an end.

'I think it’s unlikely that we will end up with a truly sterilising vaccine – i.e. something that completely stops infection – and it’s likely that the disease will circulate and be endemic,' Sir Patrick said in a meeting of the Lords' National Security Strategy Committee.

'That’s my best assessment and I think that’s the view of many people on SAGE that that’s a likely outcome.

'Clearly, as management becomes better, as you get vaccination which will decrease the chance of infection and the severity of disease, or whatever the profile of the vaccines are, this then starts to look more like annual flu than anything else.

Did not find this study itself, only articles about it 😒 A link to it would have been nice.

The source also contains a summary regarding the candidates, worth having a look at it too.

I agree it would be really helpful if we could get the raw data. But then such data won't be released to the public or the government as it is proprietary information.

Only when there are serious side effects leading to deaths and the families of the deceased sue the vaccine developer for monetary compensation, a court of law may force the pharmaceutical company to reveal the findings/conclusions of the data.

Look at the graphs.  Look at the current mortality rate 0.8%, or 189 deaths  per day vs 21242 infections per day, for October 2020.  Then look at the comparison for April 2020 mortality rate 17%, or 1000 deaths per day vs 5850 infections per day.

According to the above graphs, something has gotten much better.  Remember that this illness affects, the most, those will already significant comorbidity risk factors.  Still, we want to shutdown the economies of all the world and place entire countries into great recessions.  Ask the question, at what overall impact to society are the lock downs beneficial.

It used to be that we talked about deaths.  Now we talk about infections.  So from the graphs, while infections are way up, deaths are way down, but those death numbers are, conveniently, not an immediate issue of focus, just the numbers of new, recent infections.

Again, read the graphs and draw your own conclusions.   Not my graphs, only my interpretation of what is being presented for our information and use.  From the above article, The UK's chief scientific adviser also told peers this week that he thought Covid-19 would probably never disappear and that a vaccine won't stop it completely.

You sound like a real humanitarian

I guess who haven't lost anyone  to the coronavirus?

Lets just forget the vulnerable, they are old and weak, a drain on the economy, yes the elderly are suffering more than other groups, but the coronavirus has shown us everyone is vulnerable!!

I see health of the Economy is more important than lives

Bet your parents are proud of you?

It's what the graphs show. So, what the point looking for a vaccine? Simple behaviors that decrease the infections should greatly decrease the deaths.

I can't agree with you more. Just look at what some countries in East and Southeast Asian have done and New Zealand too.

The 'problem' with graphs is that they show what the authors want to show. We don't really know where the data come from and how they have been processed, thus 'the study' has to be published. We don't even know if those speaking about it read the study or are just repeating the PR speech.

More testing will inevitably lead to more positive tests it is a given fact. However, the number of deaths is on the rise and whilst it seems to only affect small numbers of under 50s with pre-existing conditions or serious weight issues at the moment it is a virus that can mutate and change thus that limiting factor in short order.

There was a recently posted article here that spoke to the dilemma of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.  That link will follow here.  As well, my comment associated with that earlier post.  I like to think that I am a humanitarian, to the extent that I concern myself with the greater good.  All lives matter.  All.  I cry for and grieve for anyone who may or might have passed due to this horrible and dangerous virus.

Quoting from that post, as well as my response from 13 days ago:

Current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health.”

The greater good is not being well served here, according to the article, attributed to the WHO.

On 10/11/2020 at 11:24 AM, rasbridge said:

The World Health Organisation is calling for world leaders to stop locking down their countries and economies.

Dr. David Nabarro from the WHO appealed to world leaders yesterday, telling them to stop “using lockdowns as your primary control method” of the coronavirus.

He also claimed that the only thing lockdowns achieved was poverty – with no mention of the potential lives saved.

“Lockdowns just have one consequence that you must never ever belittle, and that is making poor people an awful lot poorer,” he said.

“We in the World Health Organisation do not advocate lockdowns as the primary means of control of this virus,” Dr Nabarro told The Spectator.

“The only time we believe a lockdown is justified is to buy you time to reorganise, regroup, rebalance your resources, protect your health workers who are exhausted, but by and large, we’d rather not do it.”

Dr Nabarro’s main criticism of lockdowns involved the global impact, explaining how poorer economies that had been indirectly affected.

“Just look at what’s happened to the tourism industry in the Caribbean, for example, or in the Pacific because people aren’t taking their holidays,” he said.

“Look what’s happened to smallholder farmers all over the world. … Look what’s happening to poverty levels. It seems that we may well have a doubling of world poverty by next year. We may well have at least a doubling of child malnutrition.”

Melbourne’s lockdown has been hailed as one of the strictest and longest in the world. In Spain’s lockdown in March, people weren’t allowed to leave the house unless it was to walk their pet. In China, authorities welded doors shut to stop people from leaving their homes. The WHO thinks these steps were largely unnecessary.

Instead, Dr Nabarro is advocating for a new approach to containing the virus.

“And so, we really do appeal to all world leaders: stop using lockdown as your primary control method. Develop better systems for doing it. Work together and learn from each other.”

His message is timely. In a world first, a number of health experts from all over the world came together calling for an end to coronavirus lockdowns earlier this week.

They created a petition, called the Great Barrington Declaration, which said that lockdowns were doing “irreparable damage.”

“As infectious disease epidemiologists and public health scientists, we have grave concerns about the damaging physical and mental health impacts of the prevailing COVID-19 policies, and recommend an approach we call Focused Protection,” read the petition.

“Current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health.”

The petition has had 12,000 signatures so far.

It was authored by Sunetra Gupta of the University of Oxford, Jay Bhattacharya of Stanford University, and Martin Kulldorff of Harvard University.

When asked about the petition, Dr Nabarro had only good things to say. “Really important point by Professor Gupta,” he said.

There is a dictionary definition for good health.  Here is one: the state of being vigorous and free from bodily or mental disease.  According to a WHO doctor (Nabarro) the world today is hardly in good health and he explained why, in the OP.  It is worth repeating some of the key points raised in the OP.  These serve as a basis for a full conversation on the subject of Covid-19 lock downs.  It seems there is a consensus building, that so far represents the views of 12,000 infectious disease epidemiologists and public health scientists, that lock downs are creating more harm than any benefits, to the world at-large.  It's hard to disagree with the concerns they raise.  From the OP:

Ah WHO... the same organization that suggest masker is just for who has illness. Or virus is spreading through droplet/touch not air. And as I remember this organization also praise the success of lockdown in China.

It sickens me when i constantly see the pandemic costed in $$$$$

We are world driven by greed, there are some big multi national corporations, who stand to make millions or even billions from government's for the vaccine

But you can't count the cost in $$$$ of the people who have lost their lives

The greater good sounds like a  quote from star trek .....lol.............the needs of many outweigh the few,  god help you if one of the few!

keeping 2 meters from someone is the easiest way to stay safe and the fastest way of bring the Coronavirus numbers down, but this seems difficult for  a minority of people all around the world who whine about their civil-rights

Corona has been found to be highly contagious..........

We will all be better of when dolphins take over?..............lol.....................name the movie?.............give you a clue?, a neurotic robot :)....

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy just in case you where wandering :)

Well as the group contains some of the worlds leading scientists I'd suggest they know quite a bit about the spread of disease between them. China is in all intents and purposes a closed country as far as Covid treatment is concerned though I wouldn't be surprised if they have cracked the problem already given it escaped [possibly accidentally or maybe not] from one of their labs where it was being studied.

Hard to believe in this day and age of corruption, that any supposed organization is a puppet of any goverment?

surely not?

the W.H.O and N.A.T.O....were all brilliant ideas on paper, but in the real world they are toothless tigers, suffering from interference from all manner of goverment

Its highly unlikely, trials will take several months and there is still no proof on the efficacy any of the trials undergoing tests right now are valid protection.
