Mobile users in China banned from sending "illegal or unhealthy" text messages

Mobile phone users in China will be suspended from sending text messages if they are found to have sent "illegal or unhealthy" content.

According to China Daily, a government controlled newspaper, initially mobile users in Beijing and Shanghai will be effected by the clampdown.

China Mobile will automatically cut off users if they send large amounts of illegal information that contains "key words" provided by the police, or if other users complain about their text message content, China Daily said.

China Telecom and China Unicom will also take action, the report added.

The news follows Google's decision last week to pull its search engine out of China if it has to continue censoring search results on the internet.

China has a strict internet censorship programme with filtering technology, known as the "Great Firewall", which blocks web sites that disagree with government beliefs. Government officials also monitor citizens' emails and web communities to track illegal content.
