FBI opens China-related counterintelligence case every 10 hours

FBI Director Christopher Wray today offered the House Homeland Security Committee some sobering news about China: the FBI opens a new China-related counterintelligence case roughly every 10 hours.

Wray said of the nearly 5,000 active FBI counterintelligence cases underway across the U.S., almost half are related to China. He said China aims to compromise American health care organizations, pharmaceutical companies and academic institutions conducing important COVID-19 research.

“They are going after cost and pricing information, internal strategy documents, personally identifiable information – anything that can give them a competitive advantage,” Wray told House members this morning.

Wray also said the FBI has become worried about a “wider-than-ever” range of threat actors – from multinational cyber syndicates to nation-state adversaries. And they are concerned that these threat actors are targeting managed service providers (MSPs) as a way of attacking multiple victims by hacking just one provider.

The FBI Director added that China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS) pioneered the MSP attack technique and said in July the FBI indicted two Chinese hackers who worked with the Guangdong State Security Department of the MSS.

The Chinese hackers conducted a hacking campaign that lasted more than 10 years, targeting countries with high technology industries. The sectors they hit included solar energy, pharmaceuticals and defense.

“Cybercrimes like these, directed by the Chinese government’s intelligence services, threaten not only the United States, but also every other country that supports fair play, international norms, and the rule of law, and they also seriously undermine China’s desire to become a respected leader in world affairs,” Wray said in his written testimony.

Kennan Skelly, CEO at shyftED, said there’s really nothing new about the Chinese MSPs, adding that DHS has been picking up activity by Red Apollo (Advanced Persistent Threat 10) since 2014 with the Cloud Hopper campaign.

“MSPs are a rich target as they service many companies that fit into the 10 sectors of Chinese interest,” Skelly said.

Skelly said while MSPs aim to relieve the strain on organizations that cannot or do not want to manage their security in-house, they are equally at risk. For example, having dedicated teams and tools to protect customer organizations doesn’t mean they can lock everything down at a customer.

“Even with the right security detection and mitigation in place it only takes one employee to click on a phishing or spear phishing email to allow threat actors in,” Skelly said. “Red Apollo has had great success using both of those tactics over many years. The most crucial defense we have is still the human line of defense, and sadly that still needs a lot of work.  Until organizations begin to take security awareness seriously these threat actors will continue to prevail.”

Bob VanKirk, chief revenue officer at SonicWall, added that MSPs also need a single, centralized dashboard to more effectively manage customer networks.

“With 62 percent of Americans still working remotely, many MSPs are challenged to manage multiple customer networks from afar,” VanKirk said. “Through a single platform that tracks all its customers at once, MSPs can simplify operations and identify the new types of threat vectors to help their customers be proactive rather than reactive about a cyberattack.”

The "unseen" problem with Capitalism and Nationalism. The amount of work required to sustain these systems is enormous, so much wasted time dealing with power struggles over influence (profit)
Sickening really to know we could end all of it if Humanity so chose freeing up so much Human potential for other areas including quality of life.. But on the flipside..

YAY they're keeping people employed! Like working on even meaningless things is somehow worthwhile to people at the end of the day..

The USA Govt  is not  purely Capitalism it's a mixed economy . They have many social programs  in place to improve  the quality of life for the poor. It's mostly  businesses and the part of the government that backs business that are Capitalist . The amount of money it cost to keep social programs  in place cost the USA  just as much if not more  as the money  it cost to protect businesses. It's  been a mixed economy every since they invented  the welfare system. But the money for these  programs come from the working class . That the reason a certain  socialist ran for office 2 times and lost  to be front runner if we done what he said  and put all the programs he wanted in place the USA  would go bankrupt .  It takes money to pay for these programs .

:lmao: Your ideas are bankrupt ideas  there has to be a  balance  .  even your own country is a mixed economy.

New Zealand is In reality it is a mixture of Socialistic and Democratic governmental system that is based upon the Constitutional Monarchy of the UK. The economic system as a 'free market economy' is certainly capitalistic, but is regulated by the ideals of the governing body.

The FBI was invented  because  local police  could easily be paid off to look the  other way . All most  all Police was paid off  by the  Italian mafia ( they have there own government  they live by) and  home grown  crime syndicates they  take over  when its found to be  the police are not doing there job. .  The USA is allies with Socialistic countries   like Sweden  and others . Socialism is to give  the government total  control  in order  to have a easy life .  The problem with that  the Government ends up running out  of money  one day  and people revolt  against it  or war comes  along and destroys  it.

Both have been tested  and fell  the 1st Capitalist  system  was the  Roman Republic

So they  need  to be a balance

What are examples of socialism failures?

If you  can be paid the same  to do job with no responsibility as you can a job with lots of  responsibility only a moron  would take the job with lots of responsibility  so in a world were everyone  gets paid the same  there is 0% motivation  for advancement so you stay  stuck with what you have unlees  you can figure out a way to take it from someone else  that dont  depend on just the Government.

Other  problem socialism has is every time one of it's experiments  failed  so called  socialist  deny that it was socialism . So  ether  socialism never existed  and these people  are just making up stuff  as they go  and live in a fantasy  world  or so called   socialism is a true disaster as been  seen time  and time  again.    Always  they try to justify  it's failures by saying it was not it to begin  with when i believe they dont even know what it is  .They try to over think it.

Over the past hundred years, there have been more than two dozen attempts to build a socialist society. It has been tried in the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Albania, Poland, Vietnam, Bulgaria, Romania, Czechoslovakia, North Korea, Hungary, China, East Germany, Cuba, Tanzania, Laos, South Yemen, Somalia, the Congo, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Mozambique, Angola, Nicaragua and Venezuela, among others—not counting the very short-lived ones. All of these attempts have ended in varying degrees of failure.

The problem lies not in the idea, merely the reliance on Capitalism within the world and the fallibility of Human's in positions of power which seek to undermine anything that doesn't work in their best interests.

Simply put, once AI is smarter than Humans the time for Capitalism will come to a close and Humanity will be far better off for it, no longer motivated by profit and the greed/absolute lack of empathy for anything generally involved in the working aspects of it. It's only a matter of time, letting people do whatever they want causes so much wasted labor pain and misery that anyone not obviously knowing this I would claim is simply beyond ignorant.

AFAIK algorithms feeding the AI machines are developed within for-profit companies. Wondering when will come the day that the for-profit companies will provide algorithms that are against their own interests.
