Facebook announces the old layout is going away in September

For quite a while now, Facebook has been allowing users to switch to the new user interface but has always offered a way to switch back to the old layout. Facebook is now displaying a message explaining that the old interface is going away in September.

The new message reads:

“We’ve made improvements to the new Facebook.com and we’re excited for everyone to experience the new look. Before we make the classic Facebook unavailable in September, we hope that you’ll let us know how we can continue to make Facebook better for everyone.”

The pop-up also highlights some of the key new features of the interface including its cleaner look, bigger text, quicker loading times, and a dark mode that can be optionally turned on by heading to the drop-down menu.

Facebook’s new interface was first unveiled at F8 2019 which was held in April and May of that year, it was subsequently made available for users to switch to in March of this year.

The new interface is much more like that of the Facebook mobile app with a simple navigation bar that gives quick access to different sections of the website including Watch and Marketplace. The Facebook logo has also been completely redesigned compared to the one of the classic Facebook interface.

A word of warning, extensions like Social Fixer still do not work on the new layout but for the time being, you can switch back to the old interface, but with it being scrapped in a matter of weeks, there is little point in switching back, maybe the time can be better spent getting used to the new design.

Just hoping the userstyle script I use to widen the interface so that when I'm using it, I'm not using it as if I'm on a phone, and so to use all that extra space being widened by a script would be great.

That’s one of the advantages to using browser interfaces instead of the app, you can customise it to make it look the way you want it.

Remove the crap,  fix in place floating elements, alter colours, fonts, font sizes, change size of elements, etc.

I currently use This, and for years too, but definitely hope that it gets updated to work with new FB layout.

  • 1 month later...

after using the useragent fix to keep the oldstyle cause i really hate the new style.. they have managed to muck it up..

now when i use facebook it tells me my upto date browser is now unsupported and why because of the useragent fix.. i use palemoon.. but i have to remove the word palemoon and i have to increase the firefox number to a minimum of 70.. below where i had it set to 49.9 < old style..

new style takes longer to load.. and is BIGGER.. i dont need bigger.. i dont like i will not be force to use it.

they are forcing the new style on people which in my books makes them NAZI's.. if people dont want to use the new style.. let them use the old style..

but no.. not those NAZI's..

so anyone got a new fix.. apart from switching browsers to firefox and using the 2 addons revert and facebook purity written by the same person..

I hate firefox, due to the addons i like not working in improved browser. hence the reason i use palemoon

If the Firefox Stylus addon runs on Palemoon, it will let you customise the UI, though you'll need to know a little about CSS. You may be able to get rid of or tweak the UI elements you dislike. Then you can revert the useragent to stop that unsupported message.

I guess you're talking about Firefox Quantum? Mozilla stupidly released that way too soon, before there were decent replacement for many of the most popular addons.

Are you mourning the loss of Classic Theme Restorer?  If so, CTD's developer, Aris, has written CustomCSSforFx as a (mostly) replacement.

I moved to Quantum a while ago after ages on 56. I found reasonable replacements for nearly all addons. What old addon replacements are you looking for?

They some addons like flashgot  that new Firefox  and chromium dont  have  100%  working  replacements  . I use openwith  and open stuff  in waterfox if i need flashgot  but mostly  stay in firefox. I dont  use facebook  but  i dont think  it's right  to force new layouts on people .  the should  be like reddit.com that looks like a facebook clone  but they let still you use old.reddit.com .even Twitter  has desktop  and mobile layouts  and you can use mobile on desktop as well.

Well sadly the Author of

hasn't updated and not too sure if they will either. But it has been the best in the past before the new layout. Still a shame as that's sooo much wasted real estate for desktop....

None of the addons i got not longer work on firefox.. infact in palemoon most come up saying not designed.. which is why i switched to an unofficial palemoon which allows all my addons except flashget.. but i havent used that in ages..

As for facebook you want to talk about waste of space.. heres what they've done to people who used the useragent fix.. the fix is simple using a low number where it says firefox instead of having 99.9 having 49.9 instead to force the old style.. of course i had palemoon in the useragent set to the latest version.

yesterday morning i went to facebook and everything was oldstyle.. i had to refresh browser due to flashplayers using too much memory when it gets to 2gb it usually crashes..  FACEBOOK Did this..see picture..
