A cat which was detained at a prison in Sri Lanka after allegedly trying to smuggle in drugs and SIM cards has reportedly escaped.

The feline was detained at Welikada Prison last week with two grams of heroin, two SIM cards and a memory chip hidden in a plastic bag tied to its collar.

It escaped on Sunday when prison guards came to feed it in the room where it was being kept, the Aruna newspaper reported.

The newspaper said an investigation has been launched to find out which inmate the cat was delivering heroin to.
